Just tell her Tennessee doesn't require you to register guns. It's a fact so no matter what they say to the contrary, they are wrong. I've learned to not try to convince people after they disagree with something I know to be a fact. I just let them be ignorant because they're not worth arguing with.

Did you really need to post a thread asking for advice on talking to your mother-in-law :)

as I mentioned in the HCP waiting time thread, I finally got my HCP. my mother-in-law called today informing me that "I'd better get that gun registered before I carry it" now I know as well as ya'll do that you don't have to, and in fact there are no provisions setin place to register a gun, but how do I convince someone who "knows that you have to get the gun registered" that you actually can't register a gun in Tn?

Its your mother=in-law. Piss her off and say that you like to live on the wild side, and you will not register the gun.

I had the same problem with my mother-in-law. she came to vistit a few weeks ago. While she was at my house I was doing some cleaning of my guns. She came into the room I was using to get away from her and the wife and started asking if I had my guns registered. I just chuckeld and said NO. She then informed me that I could go to jail because I didn't have them registered. LOL. People in genral and mother-in-laws especialy, talk out their butts all the time its nothing new. I find it more fun pissing off my M-I-L then trying to make her happy.

You're asking for advice on getting a woman to admit she's wrong?

This is as far as I got. You can try the "just the facts" approach, or just let it die and don't bring it up . . . I know only ONE thing from experience with my older brother's MIL--give it time, she'll find something new to nag about. :)

You will never be able to convince her she is wrong. That is why I suggested you put the ball in her court and try to help you get it done. Let her find out on her own, from 3rd parties, there is no such thing in TN.

Lie to her...tell her its registered, and not to worry about it anymore....

When/if she makes any more reference to it....just nod your head and grin.

I've found this method also works with my wife(as well as my mother) on generally all topics, not just firearms.

I was being serious though let her call the cops on you for carrying an "unresistered" firearm, I'd like to be one the line when the cop tells her ain't no such a thing in TN.

Depends on the cop.I mentioned in another thread about the Chattanooga cop I met at a gun show who said he would arrest anybody with an unregistered gun even if they had a permit.Myself and 2 other people could not convince him there was no registration law in TN.

Imported Law Enforcement....

Nashville has a lot of those.

The last time I was pulled over, the LEO asked me why I had 2 driver's licences. I explained it was my HCP. He was a little puzzled, but proceeded to write the ticket.

lmao....sooo many good ideas...but I would still ask her for the money....ya know it costs like $500-$650 to register depending on the size of the gun and how many rounds it holds mom, and this gun is HUGE!!!

+1. I never argue with hard-headed people like that. They can't open their minds enough to even consider they might be wrong. Arguing just wastes your time.

Having had several Mother-in-Laws over the years, I profess to speak from the point of maintaining marital bliss, and here's what I would say:

Yes mother, it's already been taken care of...

well, funny you should mention that. apparently, my Mother in law got the idea from a cop.

Today, my wife decided to re-open her used furniture store. while there my brother in law came over and asked if the gun I was carrying is the one that I qualified with. seemed like a dumb question, but I told him no, I rented one.

he very matter of factly informed me that his buddy, a local cop/dog catcher informed him (after telling him about my permit... god you gotta love small towns) that the only gun I was allowed to carry was the one I qualified with...

I informed him that the law says differently, and he quite plainly informed me that his cop buddy WAS the law.

I let him know quite quickly, that THE LAW was Tennessee code annotated, and that his friend was a law ENFORCEMENT officer, i.e. he enforced the law, not made it.

he rolled his eyes, walked away and made some smart ass comment about his friend having ... THE BADGE..

my guess is my wife told her mother, who told my brother-in-law, who told this cop, who is now on the lookout for me and my "unregistered" gun...:screwy:

I'm gonna go ahead and finish printing out the rest of the Tennessee code, as well as the appropriate atty. generals opinions, because it looks like I'm gonna need them...:cop::hiding:

That's awful. Somebody superior to that cop needs to educate him a little. He won't listen to lowly civilians like you.

That is only IF this is true, and your brother in law isn't full of hot air.

naw, he's probably teling the truth about it.

that's allright. his law ENFORCEMENT friend will learn the Tennessee code when he does something about "his" law, and I slap a lawsuit on him and his department that spins all (3) of their heads around...

Which is exactly the reason I qualified with about 8-9 pistols!!!

I can carry with several different ones (or ALL of them) if I ever find one that needs to go to a gunsmith. I refuse to go without!

I was lead to believe I am the first Tennesseean or one of the first to qualify with more than one firearm.

As soon as I found out that I could carry with more than one,I did.:biglol:

Are you talking about your HCP? If so you do not qualify with the weapon you use for the safety class. It is simply the one you choose to use for the class. Once you have you HCP you can carry any legal handgun(s).

If this wasn't the case you'd have to retake the class every time you bought a new handgun.

Tedbo, you don't actually have to "qualify" with any gun you plan on carrying, that's why I posted the comment, in order to reveal the ignorance of LEO's who are supposed to enforce laws, but instead enforce whatever they want to with the old "I AM the law" BS.

just for teh record, I qualified with a little Ruger .22 that I had rented from the gunshop about 3 minutes prior to my range time.

I now carry a Hi point 9mm (Tungsten, I can hear you snickering in the background...) and I plan on carrying a phoenix .22 as a BUG. All you have to do to carry a gun in TN after you obtain your HCP, is to put it in a holster and walk out the door.

Ah, ah, ah. Don't forget to take your HCP with you when you leave the yard.
