rail road ties or the like?

Does any one know where I might be able to find used railroad ties? Or something similar that would be inexpensive to use on the back and sides of my berm? Or just be happy with the pile of dirt?

Not always, many of them have so many chemicals soaked in they will outlive all of our kids.

I would pick up the phone and call around, anything close to $10 is a good deal for a used RR tie. Ask for a bulk discount if you are getting a lot.

I saw a guy picking up a bunch from the side of the tracks. He had equipment and not just stealing them it looked like. He was selling them for $1 per foot I think. Unfortunately I do not remember the name of his business.

they resist rot pretty well if not already in bad shape but they are on the average soft.  We shot into them when I was young, just a .22 rifle, and it tore them up over time.   They won't do well for long if being hit by high powered stuff.   If there is enough dirt in front, the ties could support the dirt very nicely.
