This report got me thinking...

I am glad this man had his gun with him for protection even though he was breaking the law. I generally support the TWRA. Unfortunately they really have their heads up their a$$ on this issue. There is no good reason to prohibit carrying while hunting. Of course you can carry it during gun season as long as the caliber is big enough and the barrel is 4" long. This means I can't carry during archery season, muzzleloader season or turkey season. And during gun season I can not carry my SW 638, I have to carry my 1911.

It is an idiotic rule.

OK rant off...

Pertaining to this, I've been asked by more than one person that has violated this law and been cited if it stops a carry permit application from going through (because its a weapons violation). Comes up every year at hunting season. I have no idea. Does anyone have a clue?

That is a good point. I think it is because they don't want you to shoot the deer with your pistol instead of you bow. I will try and find something out.

That's exactly the reason. The TWRA has said that it is to stop poaching.

The state says we (permit holders) are responsible enough to carry our weapon with us just about everywhere we go. The TWRA thinks that as soon as we put our camo's on that we become immoral, unethical poachers that can't be trusted. I just don't get it.

I believe that people should be trusted until they have proven they can't be trusted. It is pretty sad how cynical this world has gotten.

+1

If we have shown ourselves to be "worthy" of an HCP, then we should be able to carry. They jeither don't want to actually WORK at catching poachers, or they don't have the resources so they "nip it in the bud" by citing everyone for no reason.

It would suck to lose your HCP over something so stupid.

I called today and the lady on the phone pretty much said that it is to keep people from poaching (what we all thought). She said there have been cases of permit holders shoot an animal with their carry gun when they are not allowed to.

I really don't think any poachers will follow the laws about what they shoot the animals with, I mean come on! They are law breakers to begin with!

It really ticks me off that the TWRA puts responsible hunters in the same category as poachers!

I think this is very true, they are still going to poach they don't care what the law says.

Well, legally you cant carry a loaded gun of any type on you, on TWRA property even when going to the public range at P. Cooper to do some shooting. Have to load and unload in designated shoot. area!

But i have always wondered if the Ranger does have the authority to check your weapon for any type of 922 violations etc.

I have even read where the BATF shows up at public ranges and asks to inspect weapons!

It makes me glad that I can shoot on my own property. I don't have anything illegal and I won't let them touch my firearms without a warrant.

What in the world is this country coming to?
