Need help: stripped screw head

Recommended Posts

I sprayed PB Blaster on it about 2 days ago. So it should be good and soaked now. I am not sure of my MAF sensor is still working so thats why I dont want to cut and rip off the MAF housing . I was taking it out to check it with my OHM meter to see if was still functioning. I'm waiting on Lowes to get in that extractor set . They were out but it's ordered.

What is it doing? I had a bad MAF sensor on a Nissan pickup a couple years ago. It would stop running when it warmed up. Took out the sensor and it would run. Poorly, but it ran. MAF sensor worked, but was sending a bad signal.

It's a hard thing to just replace to test it. Locally, they were all around $600. Found one online for about 100 and its worked fine for about 3 years.

Mazda Protege's had a recall on their factory MAFS  The factory replaced ours back in 2002 . They would only replace it one time. For some reason they tend to fail quite a bit. My Protege operates just fine. The only negative thing is that its mileage has dropped to around 23 MPG. Everytime I replace the MAFS it goes back up to around 34 MPG. So that's why I was taking it out to check it. SOmetimes they can be cleaned and that's all.

That screw looks like you could still get it with the correct angled head to me.

Buddy , I have tried and tried all kinda of stuff. I have been working on cars since I was 12 in 1985 and I have exhausted it all. Time to reverse drill-bit it  and get the "grab it" or EZ-Out" thingy .

Not to be blunt but if you've been working on cars for near to 30 years you surely should not be needing our help....  :2cents:

That is my only weakness. Over the years this is the only thing I have ever had trouble with. Usually I can always get them out one way or the other but this was a bugger

I got that darn bolt out  . I used PB BLaster on it and let it soak a few more days. I then was able to buy the "Pro Grabbit" 3 piece set and it worked smooth as butter  ! Thanks guys !  :usa:

Glad you got it out but I would have drilled the head off. Lifted the MAP sensor off and got the remaining portion out with vice grips at least 3 or 4 days ago............  Done it a 50 times or more in my career as a mechanic............jmho

Once the head is off, there is no more pressure on the screw, and it'll usually come out with just hand pressure, assuming it hasn't been cross threaded or corroded.

Japanese screw heads are different, as stated above, and typically about as hard as lead. If you've ever worked on a Japanese motorcycle, you likely have a large vocabulary of four letter words.

Amen.

And no, that's not one of the 4 letter words. ;)
