During the investigation, officers found Johnson in the backyard of the home armed with a handgun, which was holstered at his side, and another small gun in his vest pocket. Johnson does have a handgun carry permit

Just a stick in the mud, but you don't have to have a HCP to carry in your backyard, on your property.

If that was the reason for the search of the home, wouldn't that make the search illegal and therefore fruit of the forbidden tree?

I know we don't have all the facts and time line of events leading to what in that one article.  Just they have to have their ducks in a line.

..."the Loudon Police Department executed Tuesday a search warrant at the home of James Johnson after an investigation into the illegal sale of prescription drugs."

Looks like the ducks were lined up properly ...

The article says it was a search warrant on the sale of prescription drugs. Sounds like the gun find was a freebie.
