O1 tool steel in Middle TN?

I've decided to try making a knife.  I would like to pick up a piece of 01 tool steel this week.  This will be my first time buying a piece of steel, does anyone know who might stock it in middle Tennessee?  Around the Murfreesboro area?

Not sure about local. I ordered mine from amazon for about $30 for an 18" piece that was 5/32 thick if I remember correctly. I'm going to keep an eye on what you find because I'd like to get a piece of A2 for my next knife project. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

I'll check out Bladeforums.

 

Aaron Gough (and someone who posted their first attempt in r/DIY on reddit) are my main inspiration for attempting this.  Have you used Gough's techniques?  (filing jig, sharpening, etc) I'm also going to try a soup-can forge.

What makes you want to use A2 for your next one?  Any staining or rusting?

Tennessee Die Supply will have what you need.
You might want to have a discussion with them about your heat treat capabilities. That will probably drive your selection more than steel properties.

Another recommendation for the Baron. Might I also recommend using 1084 instead. If you want to do your own heat treat it is a very forgiving, easy to HT steel. It is also a great knife steel that is easy to work with.

I think after doing some more research I'm going to try 1084 first.  It appears that Aldo's 1084 is some of the best, I'll order it tonight.

I have some "staining" but it comes off with a scrubbie and some light rust but then again I just got back from florida so it was expected with the salt water. Both easily removed. I finally finished my knives today, they were WAY more work than I thought they would be.  Thanks for the 1084 recommendation, I'm not sure how heat-treating O1 would have gone.

They came out great. A lot of people just don't realize how much work goes into making a decent blade.

Exactly, I had been planning on making a couple more for gifts...but I'm not sure I want to anymore. Haha The only thing that went quickly was shaping the handle wood, I didn't mind that. I never expected cutting the bevel and getting the initial burr when sharpening to take so long. I got a little careless on the chefs knife while trying to get a last 1/2" of the edge to burr...my hand slipped and I got a decently deep cut in my thumb, it even sliced through about 1/3 of my thumbnail.
