I have just purchased my first .40 S&W in a Browning Hi Power.

I am looking for advice for purchasing practice and self defence

ammunition. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

WWB at wally for range use suited me well. Basically, whatever was cheapest was whaty I bought before I started loading for .40. The only thing that gave me trouble was Wolf steel cased stuff. Stuck in my chamber real bad... didn't even get through half of the box before I had 4 jams that needed to be hammered out. I gave the rest of it away.

Folks seem to like thh Winchester Ranger stuff for defence. I dunno if you can still find it, but a bunch of LE marked stuff was dumped on the market a couple years ago and was almost as cheap as plinking ammo... like $11-12 a box. CDNN and Ammoman.com both had it in bulk.

Have fun!

I have consolidated to .40 and my current carry ammo is the Winchester Ranger SXT 180 JHP. For practice ammo, I have been using the Blazer brass 180 gr FMJ. They have it at Walmart around here and it is cheaper per round than WWB.

Hey, I've got an EFK .357 SIG barrel for that Hi-Power if you want it! You will really enjoy shooting .40 in the HP. It soaks up that sharp edge and makes it feel like a 9mm. I shot about everything in mine and never had a problem.

Perhaps if you like it enough you might want to reload for it, quite a bit cheaper and since it should have Enfield (regular) rifling it will shoot lead bullets which are less expensive.

Im using Federal LE re-stamped 135gr...its pretty awesome....but im gonna go to WWB for my plinking....shooting hollowpoints all day gets too expensive. I love mine/nates so im sure you will like yours. Another bonus is that the .40 hipower fits perfect in my M-tac commander 1911 holster so that saves me some money :-D

Blazer Brass at WalMart or Monarch at Academy for target ($13 - $14).

Non-target is Hornady TAP or Federal HydraShok.

So far my S&W has not found anything it doesn't like, so it shoots anything and everything fed to it.
