Why Are Some S&W Revolvers So Hard To Find?

Yes, very nice. Those 625's are worshiped by many, but not too much my thing. When I went through the police academy a few years ago one of the firearm instructors from Oak Ridge PD carried a 625 as a duty weapon. He could easily dump 12 rounds into a target in 5 seconds.

You are going through what all new gun enthusiasts go through. You are looking for the one gun for all applications. … it isn’t out there.

But the good news is you don’t have to choose between revolvers or 1911’s or Tupperware guns.

Finding the right guns becomes an addiction. And like all addictions there is a cure; but as with other addictions it won’t be cheap.

But there is hope, a light at the end of the tunnel if you will; many of us here have found the cure.  Here is an example of what it looks like....

Wow, I like that one too, Patton!

I like the 64 but they don't carry as well as the 640 did. I can shoot the 64 quicker and reload it quicker.

This is not mine but this is what I really want, a 2.5" model 10.
I'm not really sure what to attribute my revolver attraction to, but there's just something about them to me. More expensive usually compared to their semi-automatic brethren, and far less rounds-in-ready -- but much more beautiful IMHO.
Revolvers have a soul. Plastic semi's are just tools... :)

Heck of a lot more hand-fitting and skilled labor on the revo production lines than the autos.... S&W only has so many people that still know how to put the wheelguns together.

Well I don't have a wife but I do have an extremely high maintenance Mutt that keeps me from buying  a lot of things. A few of my friends have said they don't spend as much on their wives as I do my mutt..............but shes my mutt and my responsibility so I deal with it....... :ugh:  :ugh:

I've got both the wife AND the mutt, so I'm with you...  :D

Dave, I think you're probably right.  I think I better go ahead and invest in a pretty big gun safe...  :D  Very nice (and diverse) collection, by the way!

All of this gun pornography is making me drool! I'm having deja vu of the "revolver fever" thread on here a few months back. I'm a Ruger D/A revolver guy. Big fan of the GP100 & SP101 lines. Lately I've been eyeing blued Smith K-Frames. Those older S & W revolvers are the bees knees.

I'm a big fan of Ruger revolvers as well.  The first gun I bought just a few months ago was a Ruger GP100 -- Love it!  They're right up there with S&W in my book.  Both have their strengths.

They aren't that hard to find.

Nice assembly, Greg. Someday I might have to do a family portrait with mine.

They most likely wouldn't fit in a single picture ;)

Sadly...that is not true. I wish I did have more of the Smith wheelies. I've trade for several model 64. 65, and 66 guns over the years and foolishly let them get away from me.

I'd sure like to add a 67 to the family though, and maybe a K-22 and k-48. Oh heck...I'd like to add a lot more.

There simply is not a more versatile handgun made than a good-quality 4" barrel .357 revolver.  It is pretty much capable of performing any task you could ask a handgun to do.

Cheap Plinking - inexpensive .38spl reloads can make destroying cans as cheap as the current cost of .22lr.

Self Defense - Most sources agree that the 125gr .357 HP rounds are about the most effective handgun rounds available.

Concealed Carry - A bit on the largish size, but most folks can carry a 4" .357 pretty well.

Hunting - Everything from squirrel to deer depending on the cartridge used.

Target Shooting - A well-made .357 revolver is among the most accurate handguns available.

Training - New shooters learn easily with light .38spl loads.  The same pistol can then be used for all the above purposes with appropriate ammo.

As mentioned above, quality revolvers keep their value well.  And the better ones are appreciating nicely.  The used Colt Trooper III I bought 10years ago for $250 will now sell for close to $750.  And if I do my part, it will work just as well for generations to come.

These are my S&W revolvers on the left is a 5"625, 4" 625, 4" 627,4" 686 SSR PRO, 686 no dash and a 640 no dash1922511_10152262841483115_377809299_n.jp

I like the shoes on the 686 no dash. Mine has plain Jane Pachmayrs on it. Easier on the hands at the range is the only benefit.

So I went to Fugate's today to shoot the LCP I bought there last Friday.  And I just so happened to remember what Patton said about Carmen having a S&W 640 last week.  So before I left, I meandered nonchalantly over to the revolver case, and sure enough, guess what I saw.  It's a terrible picture, but it looks something like this...

And no, there was no way I could leave without it.  Simply too beautiful.  My wife was with me, and I guess my big, sad eyes made her feel sorry for me, and she actually let me buy it.  That, and my promise to not by another gun for quite a while...  :D

By the way, thanks for the heads up, Patton!

The 649 is a neat little j frame as well, but the snubbies hurt my wrist too much to shoot.

The perfect j frame, and those are the best grips ever in existence for a j frame. It's beautiful!

Nice score. Glad you found what you were looking for. Now comes more fun looking for holsters. I have one for pocket, ankle, OWB, and IWB for my 642. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk

I would suggest looking for good used examples without the dreaded internal lock.

OK, somebody give me the bad news about Smiths' internal lock system. Just picked up my "dream" N-Frame off GunBroker and now I read this! It's an unfired 7.5" 657 made in late '07. Don't remember the Dealer listing that it had the lock......or that it was unfired.

Whether the lock is big deal really depends on who you talk to.  Personally, I'm not too concerned about it.  There's been plenty of discussion about it over at the Smith and Wesson forum (and I'm sure elsewhere as well).  You might want to check it out and form your own opinion.  Congats on the 657 by the way!
