Fun stuff range construction

Ok so the boxes are unpacked every thing is painted in the new house.   So now I get to have a little fun outdoors.  I want to construct a small range  on the  property.  Problem is there is such heavy over growth of years of neglect so the lanwn mower is not going to cut it.  I have been looking around for something to do the job and I am thinking either a brush hog or a rotary cutter would be needed to do the job?  Is there much difference between a rotary cutter and a bruch hog and would either of them co ok for maintainence of the grassy areas?  Also I am wondering about the size of the berm I would need to construct?  I was thinking about an area around the size of four feet tall by ten feet across?  We have a nice dip in the property which would appear to be ideal.  plus there is nothing behind it.  i would be using it primarily for handgun calibers and 22lr.  Thoughts?

Thank you

I had he same overgrowth problem. I rented a little walk behind brush cutter. This wasn't good for my application, I had 5 acres and it's hilly. I hired a guy with a tractor and bush hog. He did a fine job. I didn't have the money for a tractor setup myself yet so hiring it out was the way for me. I know use an Exmark zero turn with 60 in deck and cut it all with no problems. Entire place looks like a yard.
I'd say you're gonna need a skid steer to dig and build a berm.
Good for you to have this problem though, have fun with the place!

i was lucky enough for find a deal on a 74 Yanmar Tractor with a three point...had to buy in when we moved into our home in Indiana back 3 acres was all corn and when the guy took it out he destroyed the property massive 3 ft chunks of dirt ruts etc.  With the snow and all I found a used back blade that I used with a middle buster to plow out a patch and then took the back blade to push it into a pile.  It took about a day to make the berm so it was worth it because I was able to use what I had to get the job done while not ideal it worked.

You are golden if you have the tractor already. I need one with a bucket so I have to wait to build up the funds for it. I would look for a used bush hog on craigslist. They don't provide a finished cut for the long run but are great for letting the fields grow and cutting it when you feel like it. They do make finish cutters too but they won't work too good as a brush cutter.

I think rotary cutters are the same as a brush/bush hog.

I was very lucky I bought mine from someone that just wanted it to do a driveway and then did not want it any more because it ran hot I tried telling him you can not run 50/50 coolant mix in it because it uses a thermo syphon and the mix needs to be about 30/70 he was sure it needed a head gasket so I offered him $2500.00 for it put the proper mix of coolant in it and it has not skipped a beat in the 6 years I have owned it

Very nice! Now you just need to add implements as you need em. Nothing like a great deal!

Bushhog is a brand name of rotary cutter that has become the standard name for them, sort of like Aspirin is the standard name for Nsaid pain relievers.

If you have a few acres, a rotary cutter is an indispensable item. If you are just going to use it around the place every now and then, you probably don't need a real expensive heavy duty one.

How big is your tractor? I have a 32 hp tractor, and it'll pull a 6ft mower. If it were any smaller, I would go with a smaller mower.

Moore Brothers Equipment on 109 in Gallatin, just north of the river bridge has always been hard to beat on price for these. You could buy a used one at an equipment auction, but you may be buying someone else's headache.

its a compact 32hp diesel I was maybe thinking about trying to find a 4ft one that way I might be able to get around a litte easier with it?  I really did not want to buy a uese one from what I am seeing some look like they were rode hard and put up wet and they seem to be asking nearly new prices for them seems like Just asking for a problem.  We have a small parcel So it most likely would not get used over and over but it would be kind of nice to have it around when you need it.

I have walked the property and there are very little saplings or other debris on property but still I think it would be too much for a finish mower.
