I've got to make a weekday trip to Ashville in a couple of weeks and understand the interstate is under major construction... I'll be coming down I40E (from Cookeville) is there an alternate route, or I'm I destined to sit in a traffic jamb? I need to be punctual, how much time should I allow for this?

Lastly... is anyone clear on carry rules traveling through the mountains, on I40? - Technically, I'll be driving through state and national parks, but will be on an interstate hwy... Does the I-40 become part of the park, or am I okay to carry as long as I don't get off interstate.

Thanks for any advice...

I-40 to the detour then follow the signs. No big deal just adds another 30 minutes to the drive to be safe.

I-40E to I-640E to I-40E again.

You should not be sitting in traffic. The I-640E detour is smooth sailing. However, it will add an additional 30-40 minutes to the trip.

There is no carry issue while driving through the mountians, via the interstate. Hammer down!

Naw, c'mon. Going around the loop is 15 min more, tops.

Unless there's a bad wreck of course. Then everything stops between Chattanooga, Nashville, and Knoxville.

Thanks! I'd rather get there a little early than late. Will add 30 just to be sure.

Any of you guy's carry in NC? Sounds like I need to take special care to keep concealed (panic law) otherwise, a sounds like it's fairly straight forward state.

Taking the I-640 detour will add 15 minutes tops. Rush hour maybe 25 minutes. The interstate is not considered part of any park, so carry is fine.

Gas is unavailable in some parts of NC. We just went up to Hickory, past Asheville, this weekend. Traffic through Knoxville, even on game day, wasn't that bad. Gas got significantly higher (about 40 cents) in NC, so definitely fill up before you leave the Knoxville/East TN area.

Did someone page the NC native?

Open carry is technically OK in NC, without any kind of permit. Thus you should be OK if your weapon accidentally shows. There's some common-law offense of "going armed to the terror of the public," but my understanding of it is that it's not likely to be used against you, particularly for a brief flash of your weapon.

Do remember that you are required by law to notify any LEO you come into contact with that you're carrying. Restaurant carry is the same as here; any place where alcohol is both sold and consumed is off-limits. The main difference in restricted areas is that NC makes all financial institutions off-limits. Finally, there are no legal standards for signs prohibiting carry like here (ie the required wording), so keep your eyes peeled for signs.

Enjoy Asheville!
