Range Report 6.8 SPC - HELP

Recommended Posts

I couldn't rush home fast enough to type this message.

Yesterday, I took my newly built (2nd rifle build) 6.8 SPC that I finished last week.  I wanted to sight in the scope and maybe shoot some reloads to see how they grouped.  I was shooting off a bipod and had luke warm results with factory loaded Hornady 110g V-Max.  Deciding that my problem was not shooting from a sled, I went back to the range today.  I'm disgusted to report that it was more of the same.

I know a bad workman blames his tools, but I have an Expert Classification in NRA Highpower and consider myself to be a person who has the ability to shoot sub-MOA.

Nevertheless, here are the facts.

The barrel in my rifle is from White Oak Armament and is 16" in length.  I use their rifles in Highpower and am confident in their work and expect much better results than what I'm getting.  I'm using a Syrac Adjustable Gas block that isn't tuned, just open enough to cycle most ammo.

At 100 yards, I shot the following groups with factory Hornady 110g V-Max:

Shooting reloads, I shot the following groups:

So, what am I missing?  What have I done wrong?  My only theories, assuming it's rifle related and not me having a bad shooting weekend…….are either (1) the barrel or (2) the flash hider being too tight on the crush washer.  When I timed the device, I still needed about 120 degrees of rotation in order to time it correctly.  I have read that a muzzle device that's too tight will affect accuracy, but 120 degrees tightened down on a crush washer isn't over doing it, is it?

Please advise on your thoughts and ask questions where needed.

Well we know it isn't your shooting skills....., I can vouch for that.

I'm also going to assume that your WOA barrel is 1:11 with the SPEC II chamber.

Start with the simple stuff.  Scope and mount good and tight.  Use a rest instead of the bipod.

And try pulling the muzzle device and see what happens.

Have you been to 68 forums? A lot of good reloading info there. I Think several members there have trouble getting the Hornadys to group. My rifle seams to like the accubonds 100 and 110s, and 85 MPGs. Have several of each if you would like to try a few different bullets.

I have made a separate post on 68forums and I've gotten some great info. Similar to what Mark mentioned, I'm going to check my ring and base tension then re-time my muzzle device with shims.
