Imported/Surplus Rounds

A buddy of mine has a Mosin Nagant and loves it.  My grandpa has an SKS that he's never shot (and I'm not sure where he got it).  I've seen lots of AK's on this site.  I want an inexpensive, reliable, fun-to-shoot rifle that can serve as home defense if necessary.  Franklin Gun Shop has a bunch of random old surplus guns but I'm not sure about the integrity of their condition, so I don't necessarily know if their prices are fair based on condition (no offense to anyone who has an affiliation with the shop).

an SKS or an AK is the way to go.  A bolt rifle is ridiculous,  especially a Mosin Nagant.

I'd get an AK variant.  a SKS is way to long,  an AK is a manageable length.  If I think bad guys are trying to get in my door they will meet a WASR.

Joe Biden says all you need is a double barrel shotty.

YMMV

I'd be willing to bet that driving to Guns&Leather in greenbrier would be more than worth the time and gas over FGS.

No affiliation with either.

I've never seen anything at FGS that I would call "fairly priced". Personally, I'd drive over to the gun show in M'boro this weekend with a knowledgeable friend and see what I could find.

Put a bayonet on a long Mosin Nagant and you can poke them from the end of the hallway!  Get an M44 Mosin carbine and the fight will be over if you fire one round.  After that intruders will be deaf and blind and you can use the bayonet!

As an FYI, the Russian spike bayonet will very easily go through most interior doors and walls!

Personally, I use a Brown Bess Musket with bayonet for home defense.  If the .75 ball with four buckshot doesn't get them, then the huge muzzle blast and flash from 90 grains of black powder will stun them.  Lastly, if they are not out of the fight yet, then seeing my overweight, naked body come screaming down the hall out of the smoke cloud six feet behind a long, shiny bayonet had better do the trick!

As was said above, "fairly priced" and "Franklin Gun Shop" don't belong in the same sentence.

Mosins are fun, but would not make a good HD choice, IMO. Anything where I have to work a bolt is not going to be an HD choice for me. Plus they're freaking huge! It's hard to move through an interior with that. Not to mention that a Mosin will send that round through three intruders, 4 interior walls, the exterior wall, 2 neighbors' homes, and land somewhere 3 counties away. The M44 takes away the hugeness, but still has all of the other drawbacks of a regular Mosin. An SKS these days seems to be only a hair cheaper than an AK47 and cost the same to shoot so take that into consideration. Everyone's HD situation is different, so YMMV.

Yeah, and you will be too. :) I'm picturing some guy in tighty whiteys with headphones and sunglasses clearing his house with an M44. It's disturbing.

Noise isn't something that I'd taken into account.  Thanks for that piece.  I like the AK but the ones I've seen have been pretty pricey.  I'm looking anywhere between $400-700.  This isn't right now but more in the next couple of years.  I have a number of reliable handguns in the house that I wouldn't have a problem using for the time being for home defense.

I have no problem with my wide assortment of pistols for my home defense.  They are much easier to sneak around corners with then most surplus rifles.

The AKM would be hard to beat in your price range. Although you see a lot of bad press about them, I am quite pleased with my WASR, and one would fit nicely into your budget.

I'd be willing to bet a drive to the former soviet union to the Saiga plant itself would be worth the time and gas over FGS.

im more of a fixed bayonet mosin guy my self for home defense  but ide use my 1911 b4 my mosin LOL

For home defense, the Mosin makes the best bludgeon/club hands-down. It also allows you to shoot two intruders simultaneously with the same shot-- the one in your house, and the one in your neighbor's house three blocks over.

Did I mention that the Mosin bayonet is handy for backyard marshmallow roasts? Be sure to wipe down the powder residue first...

WASR is about $550-575 in hand depending on FFL fee,  from Bud's and etc.

 especially a Mosin Nagant.

Had to modify you post a bit, but now I cant see anything better than using an M44 as a home defence weapon. One shot and not only do they give up, the police will be able to hone in on your location due to the sound from miles away. Oh, and you may have moderate collateral damage using it

Is it just me or does the PAP look like it might actually be possible for a full sized adult to get a decent LOP on it?

If you do make the trip, will you bring me back one? I'll also throw in a bottle of your favorite scotch to sweeten the deal. And a few KGB pins would be a nice souvenir as well.

It's crazy that a WASR runs that much now. I passed on a new one a couple of years ago at $399. I just couldn't bring myself to pay $400 plus tax for what I was holding in my hand. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk

Well, you know, the base carbine 10/22 is gonna be most of 250 clams any more and it's poorer craftsmanship too. Few things stay the same, especially in the firearms world, and hardly any ever get cheaper.

We got really complacent after the AWB sunset, until big threats on gun rights emerged again and drove prices up in a hurry too.

Hell, I'm late to the AK genre, but think I might pick up another "cheap" one soon as can work into the budget, just to stash. Damn near everything is worth more than money itself these days on return over time.

The president can't run a Country, but he's been great for gun sales.  I remember paying $35 for a new 10/22 and could shoot it all day for a few dollars.

I know what you mean.   I wish I had bought a boat load of Colt Pythons back in the day.

If you're going to get an AK, I'd advise getting a Saiga.   It's worth the extra expense over a WASR for sure.

Idea of having to refit it or use proprietary mags is not an attractive one to me, though.

Pythons cost a fortune even back in the day.  Colt has always been proud of their products.
