We have a name for people like you in the sales department... we call you ......... I.T.

Not to be a stickler but I.T. and Computer Programmer are VERY different.. One of them only needs a highschool degree and a certification to competently manage a network of computers and kep the office running. The other (half of our programmers do myself included) has a Master's degree and can write software for anything be it HD TVs, Jet engines, The software that tests Jet Engines, Your Operating System (Windows), The software that allows your network card to work, etc... Most Software Developers Don't like to be called I.T. ... But I'm not overreacting ;-)

AMEN PirateQiui....programmers make the problems, IT fixes 'em:p

I actually had a "programmer" and I use that term loosely that the serious lag the company was experiencing with his overpriced software product wasn't due to the piss poor way it handled database calls....it was due to the fact that the client PCs hard drive spindle speed was too slow to run his app that lived on a high end server

I get plenty of "customers" calling me to fix the laptop little johnny royally screwed up with porn then balk when I tell 'em my fees.

I had one last week call me. Medical office, half the building is down, I'm 5 min away...they wanted me to come out and give them a free estimate. By the time I was done with the estimate I could most likely have the dang problem fixed.

I pulled a number out of thin air ...I think I said 300.00...WHILE I WAS SITTING IN THEIR DRIVEWAY. Now...I'm NOT the cheapest out there..but I know WTF I'm doing...I was right there, and could have had them up I'd guess pretty quick.

They said..OK...thanks..and hung up.

OH well...

awe, this explains why IT can't do THAT. My fortune 100 company rolled out Seibel last month for us sales folks and IT hasn't got a clue about how THAT is suppose to work for US.

The problem with dealing with someone like this is, YOU ARE NOT TELLING HIM WHAT HE WANTS TO HEAR! In my business I hear this all the time. He doesn't understand that what you are telling him is the truth and oh by the way someone has told him all businesses are rich and evil.

That's interest the best programmers I have ever met have HS diplomas and worst have Masters Degrees. The HS guys do not know they can't program anything they want so they usually can. The guys with Masters Degrees "know" it not possible and rarely produce anything but more meetings. :D

And I haven't even been there today!

Nope, but you would have been a refreshing change!

We did get a visit from Dan (Hero Gear Dan). Great to meet him! He was sporting the newest "must have," an OD green Hero Gear SMF vest which I'm sure will be on everyone here's Xmas list now (in CCA black of course with the triple bolt).

Its that time of the year. People are left and right coming in to try to sell us their guns as if we have a infinite amount of money. We do get some good deals, and some of the situations people have are quite sad, and I feel sorry for them as I've been in positions of having to sell off my guns in the past to pay for bills. Then there was this guy today.

/rant on

He comes in, wants to sell us back a Glock 19 he bought from us (supposedly, never was able to verify). We ask him how much he wants out of it, and he states that he wants $500 for it. Now, dealer cost on a new 19 is $440, so there is no way we're going to give him $500 for a used gun. We told him that fact tactfully, and that we were really bought out at the moment due to the legion of other people selling us their guns as well, and really wasnt interested in purchasing it unless it was just something we couldnt refuse.

Most people normally would understand that and move on to the next shop, but not this guy, apparently. He gets all mouthy, and starts spounting off how Dennis would do it for him, and usually only deals with Dennis anyway (never seen him in here before). I will say at this point we're getting a little irritated, but tell him that in the years working here we've never seen Dennis - while a kind and generous man, normally - give someone that much for it, and for a used Glock would be somewhere in the $375 range, and that it would prolly go out on the shelf for $425 as used guns typically must be lower in price than their new counterparts for people to buy them. Apparently he didnt like that, told us we just lost a customer, and on the way out told the guy that he was dealing with they were a prick - which rightfully agrivated him. We told him not to let the door hit him on the ass on the way out, to which he told the guy to come outside and see if he would say that, and left.

/rant off

Now, my question is simply this: the hell is wrong with people? Why can't they take something so simple as "No" for what it is and go about their way? It's not like we owe them to buy a gun from them for more than it's worth to us just because.

And Phillip, I'm sorry if this guy goes down the street to you and and tries the same thing.

BONUS POINTS::: Guess who delt with the customer! (wasnt me)

I bet I can guess.... anyway weve bought a few used Glocks the past couple days, but I dont give premium $$$$ for them either, and I dont remember anyone cussing you guys out trying to sell one of them. But I have had my share of customers this week that have bought very high priced crap that our friend Rick sells... then they get hurting for money and try and unload them on us... and get mad because we wont give them premo money for them. The only reason they come to me is Ricks already pissed them off and sent them down the road.

I would have to agree with many of the others here to a point.

People are stupid. To be more specific individuals can be quite intelligent, but people as a whole are stupid. Like lemurs running towards a cliff. They just don't stop and they go with the crowd.

One person mentioned that you are not telling them what the want to hear, you told them "no" so they throw a hissy fit. I have a two year old that does this same thing so is it safe to say that these people have digressed a few years?

I also would have to say that those with out the experience of running a business have really no idea about what it takes to keep a business running. This might surprise some people but taking a loss on an item is counter productive to keeping your business running. Some seem to get offended that you are actually in business to make money rather than be at their beck & call and grovel at their feet just to make them happy.

The guys I work with and I have sat down and discussed this very question, people expect you to do just what they want whenever they want, we like to call it the Wal-Mart mentality.

We in the Warehouse have a name for you salemen and IT people. We call ya'll Carpet Dwellers and Nerds.

Remember if it wasnt for the geeks, carpet dwellers and nerds the world would be a much different place. No online discussion forums, no computers to play games on, no cell phones, no gps, no television, no movies, no CNC machining which creates all firearms in part etc etc.

BTW: That was not supposed to be a dis on I.T.... I can't do their job, and wouldn't enjoy their job. They get stuck dealing with a lot of stupid people... And I have no idea how to fix "Laptop with windows 2000, It beeps 3 times whenever I try to turn it on then flashes red and turns itself back off"... Our IT guy at work is great. And even programmers can be stupid users... We destroy a computer weekly.. and he just fixes them without making saying a word... They should give that guy a raise.

If you had any used Glock 19s in the case, I would have pointed to the price of those, explained you still have to make a profit and suggested he try the gun show over the weekend.

Then again, he wasn't being reasonable. Welcome to retail.

We did that for years, charged $25 bucks for it - and it just got to where we didnt have any room for them anymore. That, and the fact of people getting pissed off when we wouldnt consign their gun for the outrageous prices that they wanted to put on them. I'm all for as loosing as little money as possible, hell even making a profit, but say $600 on a glock because it has extended buttons and a homemade grip reduction is stupid. Even if it is consignment, everyone wont know that and a crazy price on a gun reflects badly on us as a store.

Thats why you put the time limit on it...6 wks...also, you should charge them more..at least 50 bucks..guide them on the price, but if they want to be idiots about it, well, the gun wont sell, and it costed them 50 bucks for you to prove that they are idiots...LOL... I have never been to your shop, but if you have the room, give consignments their own case...

dunno just a thought it seems to work pretty well with the shops around here.

I just ran into the "gun show stupid" this past weekend. Went there with a gun easily worth $400 based on what they are selling for locally and on gunbroker. People offering me $150-$200 for it. Sold it to someone when I got back in town for the price I wanted. That wasn't the insulting part of the show, however......

I did a couple of laps looking for a deal and ran across a table of Ruger Single Sixes. One was an old 3-screw. Nothing too special about it, though. The others were just plain jane new model stainless single sixes. For the old three screw he wanted $650.00. For the new models he wanted $550-600. I almost peed myself. These were used guns...I can understand trying to get a premium for the OM gun, but not $650.00. I've seen those all day long for $250-$300. And the stainless new models, used go for $350-$400. Then there were the used glocks for $695.00. The guy with the Ruger 10-22 used Wally World special for $275.00. It just blew me away what people think some of their stuff is worth and how little they want to give you for yours.

I almost gave up on the show and lost all hope in the human race. I must say I was down in the dumps. The usual gun show let down is generally followed by a diamond in the rough find before the end of the day. My faith had faded in that happening at this show. I did my final lap, inspecting the cases slowly. I had sold my P95 and had SOME cash in my pocket, but not too much. Alas, I saw it. A beautiful CZ 75 P-01. It was setting at a vendor table. I thought, wow, wish I had more cash, wonder what they want for it. I picked it up....$349 on the tag. I do the math, I was going to be short. I ask her to calculate the out the door price anyway. $392.00. I said, man I am going to be a bit short. She said, let me calculate it if I charge you $329.00. "Ok" I say. $370.00 she says. I count my money. "I have $369.00". "It's yours she says". My hands shake. What a deal. I came home from the show with a lightly used (no finish wear and looks very lightly shot) beautiful CZ 75 P-01 with three mags for less than $400.00. For 3 hours that day I thought "wow, I am losing faith in people". Lady with CZ restored an ounce of hope in me :D
