Absolutely hilarious, yet complete stupidity on the caller and the responding departments.

A sore loser sent a SWAT team storming to a Long Island home Tuesday as revenge against his teenage video game rival, officials said.
About 3 p.m., the caller said his foe had killed his brother and mother, but cops arriving at the Long Beach address found his 17-year-old video game opponent playing “Call of Duty” in his own home, CBS 2 reported.
The hoax – involving more than 70 emergency responders – appears to have been an instance of a careless “game” called Swatting.

so, how does the sore looser know where to send the police, but the police can't tell where the phoney call comes from

Yeah it is kind of strange. Internet phone call, thinking Skype or something similar - it will be traced but maybe not as simple as a typical phone call?

Am curious how old the caller was, sounds to me like he needs a good lesson in humility and should spend every weeknight and 12 hours a day on the weekends cleaning the police and fire station bathrooms for a few years.

No, these days it's easier than ever to bounce a call through multiple VoIP providers and obfuscate the source. When I'm on call I "turn on" a 3rd VoIP number that I give to my clinical staff that forwards through google voice(to block spam and telemarketers) and then to my home phone. If I'm not on call they get a line disconnected message, if I'm on call it rings my cell and home land line simultaneously without them ever actually knowing either real number. Outgoing calls are easier since you can bounce calls through several country's phone systems using VoIP for only pennies a minute making obtaining information VERY hard for local law enforcement.

Add apps line "burner" for iOS into the mix and even kids that aren't technically inclined can do it. :stunned:

Wow, it is a wonder this wasn't drag out on major new networks like CNN for hours on hours leading people to believe the murder had actually happened to only retract it once later.

No mention of assault rifles in the 911 call.

It can be tracked down but it can be labor intensive because you have to work with multiple companies in multiple jurisdictions. Often the records are lost by the time you get all the way back to the caller.

This whole anonymous tip crap is abused too much.  If you call in a crime or suspicion of a crime you need to give your name and address. Also how would you be able to face your accuser in court if the police just act on a tip from an unknown source.

I think that's the same problem some of the police departments have tracking these guys as well. . .
