In our community, some folks may differ from others in experience and opinion.  Even with differences, I am pretty sure that we all wish the best for each other's families and loved ones...  so while we "talk", let's remember that.

Alright,... is there anything we can learn here?

It does seem that the author of the article is either clueless or wanted to make this guy seem like a Class-A nut job.  *edit:  or maybe the guy is just what is represented... maybe I'm the nut job.   :pleased:

One of my first thoughts is... if this guy was a helicopter pilot for only 3 years in the army.... Uncle Sam didn't make his money back on this one.  Don't we like to keep officers in longer than that?

My first thought was -  "peered through his Simmons scope"!  Cant say I've ever heard of a SWAT team sniper that couldn't get a better optic!

He's probably a high school to flight school guy. Not sure what you mean about the article portraying him as a nut job. Lots of devout Christians are in our military, and know when they sign the papers they may have to kill enemy. If you're flying a helicopter with armaments on it nowadays, not only is it a possibility, it is a certainty. I know many pilots who flew armed aircraft in Iraq and Afghanistan, and their faith is not shaken by what they did during the course of the mission and have no issue reconciling their actions, as far as I can tell. What should one do when they are the only means of securing the safety of their brethren is to kill those who aim to kill them? The folks I talk about have killed a lot of people. But these folks sit amongst TGO members here each Sunday in church. They're not any different than you or I. They've just been in an extraordinary circumstance which requires extraordinary resolve and character to come out the other side and not be looney with guilt. Folks who must kill to defend themselves and loved ones may not be as well suited to deal with it as these men, but I don't think that says something negative about either party, ya know? As far as "nutjob", I am not, in the least, concerned about our service members performing their duties.  ... not in the least.  Given sufficient information, I might have a citizen's concern with politicians' and generals' decisions.   I have no such criticism of any boots on the ground.  Period.

I was more referring to the faith aspect... as viewed from an outsider's perspective, it can be jolting.
