Supersonic 300 Blackout bullet I designed

So I have been looking for, and trying, several lightweight bullets for the 300 Blackout. Almost everything that is off the shelf is designed for the 30 carbine which can be problematic when trying to feed it in an AR.

This led me to design another bullet for use in the 300 Blackout but this time for supersonic loads. This design may need to be cast out of harder alloys such as wheel weights and even then I would suggest water dropping. Even though there is a lube groove I would suggest powder coating or keeping the velocity down to normal levels if using conventional lubes. It is .309" because I plan on powder coating it and that generally adds .001" to the bullet's OD.

OAL should be in the 2.15" on the short side to 2.20" on the long side. It will weight 118 grains using wheel weight alloy.

 

 

I am doing this for the same reason I designed the 31-240E and 31-225B. And that is to hopefully have a cast bullet that works with the 300 Blackout when no others out there will. And I suspect it will work in almost any other 30 caliber cartridge.

 

And if, when, this becomes available you will deal directly with the maker, not me, and order just like you would any other production mold he sells. I am doing this for the community and not for myself. I will not receive one red cent if someone buys this mold. He will need 15 orders to start making it a production item.

I think you'll get much better results out of the mold with that meplat.  Google the Lyman/Ideal 356402.  It would be the 9mm equivalent of what you're making here.  It just happens to be the boolit I run in my 9mm's now.  It's a wicked looking thing and shoots very well.  

 

Sure you want the plain base?  I'd be very interested to see if you get any skidding even with powder coating them after 1600-1800 FPS.  

 

I'll bet my hat these will shoot nice little clover leafs at 1500-1600 fps without powder coating them, provided you have a good fit.

Just thought of another great use for this bullet. Squirrel hunting with minimal damage to the meat when shot at slower velocities.

I am going to work up the numbers to see how it compares to the neck of a 223. But as Caster said there should be no issues feeding.

Ok, I figured out the OD for the loaded bullet at the internal magazine rib.

 

First lets look at the dimensions of the 223. On a 223 the rib rides between 1.55" and 1.75" and it has an OD of ~.253".

 

I split the difference and measured at 1.65" from the base for the new bullet design and the OD of the bullet at 1.65" is ~.18" when loaded to an OAL of 2.04". That is assuming the case length is 1.36" and the bullet it loaded flush with the top driving band. So the rib will not cause any interference problems. Even if you loaded the bullet extremely long it would probably not interfere with the internal rib of the magazine.

And just to reiterate I get nothing when someone purchases a mold. The only thing I get is the ability to buy the mold myself. I requires 15 orders for production to begin and then it is a pretty short timeframe.

If yall cast, a custom mold is SO nice to use, and NOE makes a great mold.

Now a custom mold is a bit pricy, but ya get what ya pay for, be it cheap or pricy.

 I  was just wondering would using a gas check be an option or does powder coating render them old school obsolete ?

 

I remember using some on really warm .357s years ago but "Dad just did it that way" but seems like a possible option to keep it all supersonic and maybe gain some FPS ..

Adding a GC can improve accuracy with some bullets. Other than that there generally is not a need to GC if you powder coat.
