Hiking/camping gun

So what do you guys use as a hiking/camping companion?

 

As of now I just carry the same gun I use for EDC, a Glock 27 (40sw). I will probably get a specific gun for the purpose when I move down to TN--more critters in your woods.

 

So what about you fellas? pics are even better!

Hiking usually means I want the lightest, smallest possible. I don't worry about the critters much. I just carry the smallest I have. I bought a keltec 9mm just for that purpose. Camping, like from the truck, I just carry whatever. Maybe a few. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Depends on whether I've got a kid on my back. If not, it's the usual .45 on my belt. If so, the .380 in my pocket. I usually carry bear spray too.

The 23 would cover all the bases I think. I usually carry a 22/45 when I mow, for snakes and such.

Been hiking for about 5 years now and always have my Ruger LCP and a can of Bear Spray. I've never needed either, but I always have them. Sometimes I carry a NAA .22 magnum loaded with rat shot. I have shot a snake in my back yard with it, and it was effective.

I like my 3" SP101 for most hiking and camping. If it were longer distance hiking (20+ miles), I would certainly switch to something lighter.

As long as I can spare the weight I like my Taurus Judge. A couple rounds of snake shot for the slithering varmints, then a few rounds of 45lc just in case a bear or one of those two legged varmints give you a hard time.

About the only time I do any hiking is during hunting season, during small game its a ruger 6 7/8" competition target 22 in stainless with the LCP in my pocket, big game I still carry the LCP

Either the 22/45 lite, G 23 or 27 sometimes the 38 revolver.

True we have a bunch of critters down here, but they're not big ones. 

 

Apart from maybe a really big black bear, or some of our newly reintroduced elk, any round that is good enough to use for self defense is more than adequate for anything that lives in Tennessee.

IIRC, I've never really worried about any critter other than the 2-legged kind. If I lived in the Rockies or up north then it'd probably be different. The no-legged critters would prefer to have nothing to do with you.

I agree the two legged are the biggest concern if you happen to stumble across some wacko. Even bear won't bother you unless you are too close to the cubs. They are curious though, we had one cone check is out while we were running chain says, had music playing and making a ruckus. He was about 30' away when we noticed him. He took off then.

Always take the G19... But have been known to stow the AR in the kayak on overnight trips.

Here in the West end of the state there isn't much in the way of dangerous critters. Maybe an ornery coon or a wild dog, but unlikely. I'm more concerned with the two legged varmits.

 

This is what I've settled on for a hiking/camping gun.

 

Smith & Wesson Model 60-4. Five shot .38 Special with a full lug 3" barrel and adjustable sights. Small and light enough to not get in the way, yet with enough power and accuracy to handle whatever it may need to.

I'll join the opinions of our fellow posters who mention the "two legged" varmits... They are far and away the most dangerous things down here... There are lots of places in the woods around east tennessee and southern kentucky where ya really dont want to go unarmed... Lots of marijuana growing and meth labs; even in the national forest type places...

 

Im a geezer and i generally dont stray too far from the jeep paths... We do lots of travelling around from north of knoxville up into eastern kentucky and west toward the Cookeville area on the plateau... All this country should be considered "the frontier" and you need to be armed to wander around there...

 

I always keep a small caliber (...380 or 38 special...) in my pocket and a "big gun" in reach... The "big guns" are large frame smiths (...357 and up; mostly up...) and sheriff model rugers from 357 to 44 special or 45 colt loaded with my usual recipe of a heavy hard cast semiwadcutter and lots of 2400... As much as i love the smiths and the ruger single actions; I've grown extremely fond of a recently acquired glock 20... I like it a lot... Fifteen shots of 10 mm is about a round thru a wheelgun plus two reloads with no fumbling to reload; that is hard to beat...

 

I'm like several other posters; if i wuz out all nite or in a camp i would pack my AR or a riot shotgun if i could manage it...

It would depend of where I was hiking mainly. Since I have not been on a hiking trail in about 20 years and don't see one in the near future, if I were to be able to hike and camp I would have a Taurus 444 Raging Bull 44 mag and about 3 speed loaders if I were in the east part of the state and in middle or western part probably my standard Bersa Thunder 380 with back up magazines and maybe my Marlin 22 WMR with back up magazines for camping.

I feel this way also. If I'm in the boonies I have a mini 14 in the jeep and a 1911 in a GI shoulder holster with extra mags. If I was back in Arizona I would be carrying both when in the boonies!

After a meeting with a black bear in the Mountains of northeast Tennessee several years ago, I carry a Glock 29sf when hiking or camping. Plenty of power in a small package.
