House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh Must Be Stopped!

There's a discussion going on over in the "Concealed Carry and Self Defense" forum regarding Naifeh's killing of the bill which would have allowed Restaurant Carry . Some are making noises about contacting their state reps and telling them how strongly they feel about the bill and though that is good, it really won't help much in this situation. The Dems control the State House and so Jimmy Nafeh as speaker can pretty much do as he pleases which includes stacking committees and going in and voting on issues himself to kill bills that are important to us such as restaurant crry, park carry and the like.

As speaker, the Covington Democrat is entitled to vote on any House panel at any time. For example, Naifeh, with the help of a brand new member of the Legislature, a Memphis Democrat by the name of Rep. Karen Camper, helped override an earlier subcommittee vote in favor of a bill that would close handgun permit records from public inspection. Naifeh said "I'd really prefer to not go the committees and vote. But when it's a matter of importance, I do."

Naifeh said he's not worried about alienating fellow Democrats who support various gun-related proposals. "We realize we've got different views on gun bills, and we've had discussions on them," Naifeh said. "And it doesn't cause any friction whatsoever." That's because as Speaker, Naifeh determines who in his party lives or dies politically.

Folks, there are only 4 house seats which keep our nemisis, Mr. Naifeh in power. If the Republicans were to take these seats in this upcoming election then they would have the majority in the house and Naifeh would loose his power.

Tennessee is solidly behind McCain and Palin. Obama has written off this state as a loss and many Democrats will not show up at the polls. With this in mind, this is perhaps the best chance "gun rights folks" like ourselves have to affect a change in the State House by electing Republicans to just FOUR MORE SEATS ending 100+ years of Democratic control of the State Legislature and thereby removing Jimmy Naifeh from his seat of power (read throne).

There are a number of House seats that are up for grabs this election cycle and some of them are very close. The message here is to;

  1. get out and do some campaining for these Republicans and
  2. get out and vote and when you pull that lever for McCain and Palin continue on down the ballot and pull the lever for the Republican contender for the House seat in your district.

With the kind of tricks that Mr. Naifeh plays in the State House, this is the only way we are going to get the type of gun laws we desire.

Get involved and get out the vote!

Well said. I never want to discourage anyone from contacting their legislators, but in this case it really want help that much.

From what I can tell the VAST MAORITY would vote in favor of this bill, but it has never made it to the floor...and for the very reasons you stated.

Ya know....sometimes you have to flush twice to get the bowl clean. I wished I was albe to vote in tipton county. Naifeh would have been out a long time ago if I had any say in it. I know he and his family are quite influential up there though. Guess they keep greasing the right palms.

So the "Summer study" died? I have not heard anything else about it after they deferred it earlier this year.

Summer study wasn't ever going to happen, just smoke blowing by Naifeh.

Well....I'm not even 100% sure what "Summer Study" even means.

Because this is an election year some of the same legislators may not even be there for the next session. Also a bill can carry over from one year to the next in the same 2 year legislative session, but 2009 starts a new session and AFAIK bills can not carry over from one session to the next.

So really about the best that could come out of the summer study is a new bill being introduced in the 2009-2010 session that all sides could agree on. But don't hold your breath.

Summer study in an election year means file 13.
