3rd one of the season.

Recommended Posts

Got off work today and decided to hit the woods. I setup along a fence row that separated 2 fields.and started calling. I called for 45 minutes to an hour before he came strutting in. He never once gobbled but seems I'm used to that this year. I actually heard him spittin and drummin  before I seen him. I made a 10 yard shot and he went down. Had to shoot through a grown up fence but I knew it wouldn't be a big issue. he weighed 21 pounds had a 9.25 inch beard and 1 1/8th inch spurs. Not the longest beard this season but had nice spurs.

I picked up some Long Beard XR's this year.  If you saw my "I hate bass pro shops" thread, the ammo they didnt have was the 3" #5's so instead i got the 3.5" #5's.  I just have a stock turkey choke with the benelli but feel like I may need to choke it down a little tighter one day.  I have only shot it out to 30 and it did well.

I wouldnt choke it down to much cause of the closer shots you may get. Thats why I went with the #6 shot, more pellets in them. From 10 yards to 20 the pattern was really tight with my choke. Like I said I shot out to 60 and it ate that target up. With the right load and choke these new longbeards can be very deadly at greater distances. They patterned better than the Hevi shot blend with my setup but each persons setup will be different.

I look forward to turkey season every year. Love the challenge of calling in a bird. Gets my blood pumping and it never gets old. Hopefully next year I can start my Grand Slam that I have always wanted to do.

FWIW- The Osceola is getting tough to get. Researchers at the U of FL found that more & more Osceola turkeys are more hybrids with Easterns than true Osceolas. You have to go as far south in the state as you can to find the pure birds.
