I wondered if you were aware that you can get an out-of-state CCW that is legal/recognized in Tennessee. For example, Indiana has a lifetime one at $120, and they have reciprocity with our State. I heard that some states (Tn?) are putting together databases with CCW holder's license plate/registration info, supposedly for 'officer safety' on traffic stops!?

Yep, and you can have non resident permits from more than one state, too.

You have to carefully consider where you travel to consider your best options, though...for example, FL, VA, WVA, OH, don't honor IN permit, all common places traveled by many Tennesseans.

The TN permit seems to be as widely honored US wide as any, although I'm sure there are specific states' permits that would benefit any given individual who needs to spend time there, but doesn't honor TN's permit.

Florida is still considered to the be 'the' non-resident permit to get.

Tennessee recognizes ALL other states' license/permit to carry a handgun. But if you're a Tennessee resident, you are obliged to obtain a Tennessee HCP. If you move here from another state, there is a six month grace period to get a Tennessee permit.

I have a Florida and Tennessee permit, I just renewed my Florida but I will not do it when it expires, Tennessee NOW has just as much recepitory as Florida, the benefit to a Florida permit is that it is a Concealed Weapon permit, not a Handgun carry permit, meaning in the state of Florida I would be able to carry my PS90 if I wanted to,

I know a couple of TN residents who have kept FL permits and did not get TN permits. Would this now be not valid?

If you are a TN residents you must have a TN HCP.

When I moved here from Florida, I had to surrender my Florida permit, the receipt I got after taking the TN class worked as my carry permit until my TN came in, However, the state of Florida does not care, if you are a resident of TN, they will let you renew your Florida permit, I just did, but for the money it is not worth having as long as I have a TN permit, Florida use to be the king of Permits as most states recognized them, now TN has just as many states

That's odd. I moved from Florida to Tennessee three years ago. One of the first things I did was get a TN permit. Nobody asked me to surrender the Florida permit, and when I called to change my address with the Florida Division of Licensing, they told me that the permit would continue to be valid until its expiration date. At that time, I would have to get an out-of-state permit. When the time comes (in 2011), I'll likely do that, just for the heck of it.

It was really nice to be able to carry on my Florida permit while waiting for my Tennessee permit.

I got my Tn permit last year and DMV told me just to keep my Fl permit and use it until it expired.

I think it depends on the clerk at the TDoS. I have had them take my old DL when renewing,and I have also have them tell me to keep the old one.

I'm sure its in their rule book somewhere,and I'm also sure old HCP's and DL's just get a hole punched in them and thrown away...

Yes he is mistaken, as a TN resident of 6 months or longer he has to get a TN permit to carry a gun, as far as Florida is concerned he is Covered, Tennessee however feels diffrently ( I went through this ) Taken from the TN department of Safety Website:

If a person with a handgun permit from another state decides to become a resident of Tennessee, such person must obtain a Tennessee handgun permit within six (6) months of establishing residency in Tennessee. Such person will be processed as a renewal applicant if the eligibility requirements of the other state are substantially similar to the eligibility requirements of Tennessee.

I agree, I was allowed to keep my DL this last time in Nashville, they popped a hole in it, always before they took it from me,

When moving to TN from Arkansas, i got my handgun carry permit renewal application filled out and got a new driver's license all at the same time. The highway patrol office did take a photocopy of my Arkansas concealed handgun license to send with my TN permit application. I only had to pay fifty dollars (no training required for me b/c i had the equivalent class in AR) and i got to keep my AR CHL to use during the six month residency window. I got my TN permit about a month after visiting the highway patrol office. They did punch a hole through my AR DL and keep it.

Here is something to ponder also. Florida will only recognize a permit if you are a resident of the state it was issued from. However FL will issue non-resident permits to people from other states. Per their own restriction does that mean they will not recognize their own permit since the holder is not a resident of the state??

Yep...I have always thought was a little weird myslef....

Seems like the majority of states that issue non-resident permits only recognize a permit of the state a person is a resident of. But I guess I always thought they at least recognized their own permit.
