Tell me about your SKS-M

I have an AK and a run of the mill Norinco SKS. I'm thinking I'd like an SKS-M, which is the 16" version that accepts AK magazines. What do you think of yours?

I've played with a few of em, they're awesome, much better quality than an AK IMHO but they're much heavier. They also can't accept drums, mag well is too deep.

For what I've seen SKS's go for lately, if you can get one under five nab it. They went for $399, about five or so years ago.

I wouldn't give over $500 for one, and that's if I really wanted one. They can be finicky with mags, and the SKS "D" has the better magazine release when compared to the SKS M.

My Grandfather has one I shot on occasion. He was in the Korean War so he collect firearms from that period.

I'm not sure what model his is but it uses a mag release like an AK if I recall. I does also accept AK mags.

It functioned great, never a problem when I've shot it. But I haven't shot it more than a 100rnds at best.

It's beat the heck out of the standard version with a mag conversion. No need to have the bolt open to insert a new mag.

Here is a pair of paratroopers my buddy had made up for his two sons, compliant but with custom triggers, bedded, etc.

Who manufactures an aftermarket SKS trigger? I'd love to have a couple similar to the Tapco in my AK.

Picked it up this afternoon. I'll try and shoot a few rounds through it this weekend and see how it does. I believe I'll like it better than my standard SKS.

When they were cheap it was hard to beat an SKS (of any flavor).  Now they've dried up and fetch much higher prices - hard to find a paratrooper model under $400.  At that price I think an AK is a better choice, but the SKS is a great KISS rifle.  I've owned a couple over the years, including a "M" and they all were 100% good to go with whatever I fed them.  My fav tho are the fixed mag "paratroopers" with the 16" barrel.  One you get decent with the stripper clips it's a lot of fun to shoot that rifle.  I need another one!

Send the trigger group to Kivarri, you'll be astounded at the difference.

I shot it this afternoon. The rifle is good to go. The promag magazine I got with it is junque, I still believe I prefer the regular sks or the AK47 over the AK-M.

Got a pair of them that I've had for years.  Built them both identical and milled the stocks to allow them to accept Norinco drums.  They've been completely refinished in Parkerize+Duraheat ceramic finish and the triggers have been reworked.  I have pics of both but they literally look identicalPicture016.jpg

The one I had is posted in the AK pic thread. I liked it but I thought the square forend was a bit awkward and large for me and the thumb hole stock didn't fit right for me either. Swapping mags wasn't to bad once you got the hang of it. Neat rifle over all. Kinda wish I would have kept it. Someone on here got a great rile a few years back for a great price compared to what they run for now....
