U.S. Navy's New boomstick: 32-megajoule rail gun

They are using the same technology as is used in the Aircraft Carrier CVN78. I dabbled in some of the design work for the Launch and Recovery systems for this boat a few years ago. Electromagnets can be wicked.

Looks wicked. Says they are lighter weight and could outrun heavier ships. My first thought was they could chase down and shoot farther, win/win.

Negative, Metal Gear Rex. The rail gun system on it was used to deploy it's nuclear payload into the atmosphere prior to ignition. Most early warning networks pick up on the heat signature of the launch of the warhead but what happens if the ignition is only detected halfway through the warheads travel? Scary stuff indeed, and this was from a video game from when I was a kid.
