Silencers to make a legal 16?

Recommended Posts

Ok, I had the strangest idea. What if, I had a barrel underneath the legal 16" limit and was deciding on putting something onto the end of it. Would a sound suppressor be legal, given it makes the barrel 16" long? Yes, I know it has to be permanently attached, and the $200 has to be payed to the ATF for the sound suppressor. I'm just asking, if done right, would this be legal?

Here is a link that answers your questions.  Cliffs notes version.  Yes it's legal. It's the same cost for a tax stamp for either and suppressors are expensive, so it can kind of be a waste of money, since you limit the suppressor to being on that one gun.  Alternate idea that would work well is adding a shroud that gets you to the 16 inch length, with an inner diameter large enough that to install the suppressor inside of the shroud..
