CMP - Civilian Marksmanship Program

Over the past couple of years, CMP - the place you get M1 Garands and M1 carbines - has changed / relaxed their requirements. I thought it might be helpful to post the current requirements.

US Citizenship and age - copy of birth certificate, passport, proof of naturalization, or any official government document that shows birth in the US or otherwise states citizenship as US. A drivers license is proof of age, but is not proof of citizenship.

Membership in CMP affiliated organization - copy of current membership card or other proof of membership. Over 2000 affiliated organizations. Membership in many can be accomplished online. CMP has a list of affiliates at their website, and if you can't find one locally they will find one for you (email them at custserve@odcmp.com or call them at 256-835-8455). Military/National Guard active/reserve/retired service, as well as LEO including retirees satisfies this requirement.

Firearms related activity - proof of participation with any marksmanship related activity or other firearms safe handling. Current or past military or LEO service, Handgun carry permit, C&R or standard FFL, hunter safety course completion, as well as any competition or clinic, or range official certification all meet this requirement.

Legal Eligibility - if you can legally buy a firearm from your local gunshop, you can buy it from CMP. The info you submit will be submitted to NICS to verify this.

The only one around me is ORSA, and I have to be 18 to join :D

They haven't answered any emails or anything, either. An association would be a good thing for Mom to join, but they haven't returned any emails.

I looked into a purchase not long ago at Camp Perry and the supply was nil. There were none available.

2How, CMP had a half dozen tables at the Hampton gun show/Garand Collectors Association yearly meet. They have a fair supply of Garands in several grades, rack and service grade Inland carbines, a very small supply of Krags and some pretty darn nice M44 mossberg 22 trainers from the 40's. I'll bet they brought a truckload to Perry, too - but sold out quick, as usual. Check the rifle sales button on the CMP website for what is currently available and what price.

Times change - when I bought my first CMP garand, it was one rifle per person per lifetime. After Clinton had thousands of them destroyed, though, they changed the rules. You can now buy 12 service grade garands per year.
