sr1911 trouble

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had their SR1911 not load the first round. Mine has about 300 rounds through it and last time i shot it, when the slide was released it missed the round. I cycled the slide and it missed the round a second time. I unloaded the mag and reloaded with different ammo and it worked fine.  Seems like may have been ammo but it's odd and just wondering if anyone experienced this before. Btw, I was using a factory mag.

Is this your first 1911? Check that the mag is loaded correctly. I know this sounds odd and maybe insulting to you, but it's not meant to be.

Seriously, load your mag, tap it firmly in the heel of your hand  on the baseplate t make sure the rounds are tightly stacked. Then tap the back into your hand to make sure they are firmly seated. If that doesn't help, check the feed lips on the mag. Maybe slightly spread, this might require a more knowledgable person than myself to check.

I agree with highpower. This can happen with any mag, the first round needs to be tight to the rear of the mag with the bullet part of the cartridge pointing for lack of a better term up. I would check the way I was loading the mag first, then the ammo and lastly the magazine it self.

This is my first shootin 1911, I had a colt commander but only test fired it once.  I did notice how the top bullet can either be pointing straight or slightly upward. I will try your all your suggestions next time out and keep them firmly placed and pointed up. Thanks.

This

I've never had a problem with my sr1911. It eats anything I feed it and I use factory mags also.

Did you have the magazine seated firmly?

It is possible that you inserted it enough to not fall free, but did not fully seat it and engage the mag catch.

This will cause the same issue.

Thus the reason for the Tap( Slap the bottom of the magazine to fully seat the magazine.)

Rack (Rack the slide to eject any possible faulty round and load a fresh round.)

Bang ( Return weapon to target and engage)

                                       Drill

I haven't had any problems with my SR1911, buy my father's SR22 seems to be having a problem... it doesn't load the 2nd round...     It loads the first round... fires, but doesn't load the 2nd.... then after you rack the slide again... the rest of the mag shoots fine... Very peculiar

Try loading the mag 1 round short of full.

Clean you magazines, check for springs binding, and burrs on the follower. Chances are the spring/follower is binding in the magazine tube and not presenting the top round to be picked up by the slide. Unless----------------- you're short cycling the slide when you load the first round. To check for that, lock the slide back, insert the magazine, then drop the slide using the slide stop. Hopefully you don't have a shock buffer in the gun causing the short cycle.

I have found the SR1911 to be a bit oversprung in the recoil spring department and the factory mag spring a bit weak.   My observations are that the slide can overrun the cartridge before the mag can present it to the top.   Swapping in a 16# Wolff spring has helped in the two SR1911s I've owned.   I also lack confidence in the Ruger factory mags since on two occasions, it has squirted the whole stack of rounds onto the ground when I bumped the edge of the mag pouch while pulling the magazine during a speed reload.

I throw them back in the factory box and use either Wilson 47Ds or CMC Powermags which work well in about every 1911 I own.
