If you had $1000 to spend on a rifle....

Out of that list, I'd choose the FAL. Not on the list, I'd probably opt for a DPMS .308 AP-4.

Simply... they just have the best ergonomics and controls layout.

Joseg, according to the little icon under your avatar you are active or retired military. You also hold an HCP, right?

CMP's requirements have changed. There are more than 2000 affiliated clubs and organizations throughout the country, membership in many of these can be done online. Go to WWW.ODCMP.COM and click on the "CLUB INFO" tab. If you have problems finding a club, call the CMP (256-835-8455) or e-mail custserve@odcmp.com and they will find one for you. Membership in VFW, AL, DAV, MCL etc. also qualifies. US Military active or reserve, or National Guard, including retirees. Law enforcement departments, agencies, organizations and associations, including retirees.

There is also a requirement for proof of participation in a marksmanship related activity, which can be satisfied by providing documentation of current or past military or LEO service, HCP/Concealed carry license, C&R license, completion of hunter safety courses, or certification from a range, club or LEO official.

So qualifying organizations and marksmanship activity are extremely simple to satisfy, and you are probably ALREADY QUALIFIED! Get out your ID card, make a few copies, go see a notary public. Full instructions and the forms are at this link:

Service grade Garand from CMP - $595 +shipping

Greek surplus 30-06 from CMP - $55/240 rd can $220 for 960 rds +shipping

This argument is to convincing. Ill be contacting them as soon as I get my sign on bonus. Between this and the two firearms I want to pick up from Joe I wont have any cash for ammo lol.

I picked out a service grade with a new CMP birch stock. Muzzle gauged at 0! I'd write 'em a little note, requesting a service grade/cmp stock/good bore. They are very accomodating (and the little redheaded gal at Anniston is cute as a button, to boot).

Or you could buy the AR I'm thinking about selling:D

I picked up a Tantal kit because I got a decent price, and the good ones are getting hard to find, I believe I'll get the receiver ordered then I'll be putting an order in for a Garand!:D

For around $900. you can get a VZ-58 or an Arsenal 107fr, both of which have only been available since early this yr. I got 1 of each and love them both!

or ?? Why your choice?

When faced with that dilemma I went to Anniston and bought a Garand and a 1903. (I went back later and got the M1 Carbine.)

I thought I better get them while I still can.

The next time I bought a DPMS panther .308AP4.

I wanted an AR, but didn’t want a .223.

The next time I bought a Remington 700 VLS and a Leupold scope.

I wanted a long distance .308. rifle.

I have no idea what the next time will be.

DPMS AP4. Or, I'd get a ar in 5.56 with a heavier 20" barrel and a flattop for a scope. The AP4 is just a blast to shoot. I highly recommend it.

The S/N puts it about 300,000 from the last rifle made (not counting the 'X'-guns). Not very impressive from a collectors standpoint, probably, but she was born pretty late in the game. Bore gauged at zero, no sign of wear anywhere. Probably not the worst spent 600 I've ever blown. Not as flashy as an AK, AR, or exotic milsurp, maybe, but suits me fine.

There are many like it, but this one is mine. :leaving:

It happened that the Garand Collectors Association yearly meeting was held during/at the Hampton gun show, the weekend before I reported aboard ship. I was just in the right place at the right time.

The Anniston crew had several tables, and had brought a triwall or two of Garands and another of carbines. They had maybe 30 of each out on the tables. Once I worked my way through the crowd to the table I picked this one out of the 'service grade' selection, they tagged it, stored it, and I sent the paperwork in 3 weeks later (from Greece, as it happens). Took about 10 days from them receiving the mailed in order to delivery.

Makes you wonder what was on the table before I got to it. The 'correct grade' rifles there were stone cold beauties (yeah - better looking than this one!!!), but out of my price range at the time.

I'd suggest going to Anniston. Heck, I'd go again myself, if I had the opportunity. If I'd had more cash free at the GCA show, I'd have picked out a couple more.
