Dog vs Racoon. Racoon loses (Not a video)

Our neighbors have a little Jack Russel Terrier. He looks little, but he is one of the most muscular dogs I have seen. He has taken up part time residence in my carport. Comes and go's when he feels like it. On at least a weekly basis he drops off a dead squirrel, rabbit, or apparently whatever animal has had the misfortune of treading in his direction.

Stepped outside this morning and noticed his nose was sorta tore up, piece of skin on top torn, not bad, but top of his nose was red also. Clearly looked like he had been in a fight. Then I see underneath of him a complete freshly torn off Racoon's tail. torn off at the base. This tail was nearly as big as the dog.

The dog has had his shots, still going to let the owners know. But this is a happy little dog, walk out and he doesn't even wait, flips over on his back to get his chest scratched.

At night he must turn into a predator/hunter.

those dogs are high strung anyway, but i almost have to say it was older racoon or something like a pet for it to have not killed the dog.thats my thoughts on it cause those things are mean.

I've seen a raccoon whoop the crap out of a healthy full grown black lab

I wonder if this JR didn't get a mouthful of tail as the coon was going under/through a fence? either way, it's funny to think about that coon running around with no tail and that lil guy chewing on it on your carport.

I'm a little late to this thread.  Let the owners know that the standard protocol is to immediately booster the rabies vaccine on an up-to-date animal, even if the rabies vaccine was given relatively recently.  In absence of the raccoon to test for rabies, there is no way to be sure, and the Compendium on Rabies Control recommends immediate re-vaccination of animals bit by a potentially rabid raccoon, and keep under observation for 45 days.

There have been a few cases of well-vaccinated animals getting rabies.

I have mountain cur coon dogs. They get chewed on a lot by coons during hunting season. Once a year vaccinations is all they get.
