Scope and scope mount

Thinking about getting an actual scope and not a red dot for a new build. I have zero knowledge in this area and would like some suggestions for a reliable and inexpensive one. It will be mated to a ar 15 and possibly a C93.

Burris PEPR is one of the best bangs for your buck. You can get one with or without quick release toggles.

I'll check it out. I probably wont go for the quick release toggles.

I've been real happy with my leupold 1.5x4 in a pepr

I hear great things about leupold, but most of the ones I have seen have been rather pricey.

As far as the scope goes, a Nikon P223 is gonna be hard to beat.  If you don't like the large/long type scope, they make a short compact one too.  Ain't looked at it yet, but I probably will soon.

I agree with Caster on the Nikon P-223.

I took mine off my AR-15 and put a Aim Point red dot on it. The P-223 went on my new Ruger 10/22.

I think I seen them at the Walmart counter for $149.95 the other day? No .22 LR to look at anyway...

I'm Nikon P-223 all the way. Have one on a .223 as well as the P-300blk on my blackout. For the price they hold zero and are nice and clear.

I would go Vortex over Nikon. The past couple scopes I bought are Vortex Crossfire - as good quality as my Nikon Buckmasters at a less expensive price point.
Not sure about the P223 though... Edited by jonathon1289

Forgot to list yesterday, for the mount I am using Primary Arms one piece mount (on my AR). It was actually a package deal with the Vortex scope I wanted and the mount is very solid. I do not see any deals including their mount right now.

However, they do have a deal with some of the Nikon scopes to get a free Nikon mount. Here is one, they have a couple more listed. https://www.primaryarms.com/Nikon-NK8496-P-223-3x32-BDC-Carbine-Rifle-Scope-p/8496.htm

Thanks for those links. I will order one the next time I have some extra cash. I have never sighted in a scope before and what would be the best way to do it. I would probably like to sight it at 100 yards.

If you zero at 50 yards, you'll be about 1.5" high at 100 and back on at around 200 yards. As far as the "best" way to zero a scope...I personally will just set up at 50 yards with two 12" targets side by side on my target stand. Fire 3 shots, adjust accordingly, and repeat. Make sure you're on sandbags or some type of rest to take your movement out of the equation Edited by KKing

I mount my scope, then use a cheap multi caliber laser boresighter in the house to roughly adjust the crosshairs in windage and about 1" high. When I go to the range, shoot at 50 yards, 1st shot has never been more than 5 inches from POA. Make adjustments, fire 2nd shot to verify and then dial in at 100 yards.

How does the nikon p223 stack up against the bsa sweet 223?

I've never looked thru the BSA Sweet 223, but if it's similar to any other BSA (not that there is anything wrong with them, I have one on a spare muzzle loader) the Nikon outperforms it on clarity, light gathering, and holding zero. Now keep in mind this is referencing my previous BSA experience and not on the specific one you mentioned...

Also keep eye relief in mind as the Nikon is pretty forgiving.

Thanks for the info. I know BSA isnt top quality, but a fellow tgo'r has one on sale and its half the price of the nikon.

I've been in the same market and have it narrowed down to either a Nikon or Bushnell AR scope. They're both around the same price and have similar features. For me the pros to the Bushnell over the Nikon are the adjustable parallax ( which I keep getting convinced is/isn't important) and the Bushnell has higher magnification. The Nikon has a lot of fans though and their ballistic(?) software is pretty handy I hear.

Well I went for the Bushnell. I'll do a full review when it gets here and I take it out.

I cheaped out on the mount, went with http://www.brownells.com/optics-mounting/rings-mounts-amp-bases/scope-rings/30mm-maxima-qd-rings-sku100005553-41028-62636.aspx
Instead of a PEPR. If they work well then great, if they're lacking I'll find something else to do with them. I hate the rings on one of my other rifles so I almost hope I go with the PEPR.

I also got some spacers to make my 1" scope work with the 30mm rings. ;)
