Draw String Danger

Recommended Posts

As an Instructor, I emphasize the importance of slow and deliberate re-holster.  After all the training and time spent for one to draw and possibly use their firearm, don't be in a hurry to re-holster.  Most NDs happen on the draw or re-holster; so BE CAREFUL.  In this situation the draw string adjustment device caught the trigger.  The victim didn't insure he had cleared his garment.  This can happen with any glock type trigger safety.  Thought you might like to see the video and hopefully prevent a tragedy.

Are you sure the draw string was the problem? or the Glock........

If the trigger on a Glock is not pulled it will not fire. How hard is that to compute?

Now, the better question is are you sure the draw string was the problem instead of the operator's finger?

In this case pretty sure the draw string, and it doesn't limit the problems to Glocks. I had a student yesterday, as he was re-holstering have the draw string trapped by the trigger guard.  I was standing there, stopped the process and made the very point of being sure the garment is cleared.  I don't know that anyone even uses the draw string much, so cut 'em off  IMO.

NOTHING needs to be around your holster that could get into the trigger guard. One of the first things I look for in class is who has keys hanging from their belt next to their holster, drawstrings on jackets, shirt tails , etc. Any gun with no manual safety applied can fire if the trigger is pressed...whether it is pressed intentionally by a finger , pressed UNintentionally by a finger , or pressed unintentionally by a foreign object that was close to the holster. A khar, Sig, SW MP or even a revolver or ANY DA auto carried with manual safety OFF can all fire if shoved back into the holster with something touching the trigger.

Draw QUICKLY, shoot PRECISELY, and reholster RELUCTANTLY.....

Too many people wanna look "cool" like on the videos or at a match. Always take a quick look at your holster to check for problems before you reholster. You don't need to stare a hole through it but just a quick glance to make sure you hit the holster and that there is nothing in the way.

I cut those stupid drawstrings off all my jackets too, but like CHL said, a shirt tail can cause the same issue.

I'm sure you all noticed at the end of the video that even though the chief admitted it was operator error and the cause was clearly pointed out, they still called Glock for a comment. What do you say if you're a Glock spokesperson? It's not their fault. They don't call Ford for a comment when an F-150 owner crashes their truck due to negligence!

Like I said in another thread. Happened to me once on my range with an xd40. Hand on grip. Sure grip safety was depressed but luckily I felt the tension and cleared before ND. JTM We the People of the United States, in order to form a more Perfect Union......
