e-cig taxes, and why we should care

Just read this: States push to regulate e-cig industry http://fxn.ws/1gykMv9 I've never smoked in my life, never will, but this infuriates me. First, the e-cig products are not tobacco, and they are not cancer-causing so not your typical "sin tax" target, thus they should not be taxed any more or less than any other retail purchase. But F'ing governments are taxing them just like real cigarettes out of pure greed, no doubt to give more money away via entitlement programs. As gun owners we need to fight this concept the same as special taxes on ammo, guns etc. or many of our favorite purchases might be up next on the "sin tax" block. And MN taxed them at 95%!!!

:stunned: Stupid...just really stupid.

One department says cigs are bad...we must stop people from using them. So let's push the nice, healthy e-cigs on people and get them all healthy. Another department says wait...we'll lose all that tax money!

No we won't! We'll just tax the artificial cigs like they were real. We can't lose on this.

Government exists to remove both freedom and money from the citizenry.  Ours is so in debt, it has to develop new revenue streams at all costs.  It will end, though, someday.

Cars getting better and better mileage, so less gas tax.

Now the government wants to tax us on mileage we drive.

The e cig thing was coming sooner than latter.

We have just started vapeing and now this.

GREAT

It's all about health. As long as the money keeps coming in.

This is a chance for people to avoid some really serious health problems in later life and contribute more to society. The money savings are an added incentive for them to do so.

Government is evil.

Sin tax.

They'll tax pot and whichever other drug they decide is good for us to have too.

And some of you think legalizing marijuana will make it cheaper?? The state government will make your local dealer look cheap when you see what they will do with taxes if they legalize it.

You have a product here that is doing some good and helping some people. But since use of the product it replaces is seen as a weakness, and will cause the state to lose tax money when smokers quit; tax the ever loving crap out of it.

Being stupid should hurt. Edited by DaveTN

I don't smoke and have no interest in vaping but I know a few people who are vaping the nicotine free vapors who have never smoked before.  With that set up it would be like putting a special tax on a candy bar or cold drink.

Don't some locales in Cali tax candy, sodas, and such?

The government has become a monster. They perceive their jobs as being writing bills and passing laws.....more and more bills and more and more laws. With each new law freedom gets smaller and the cost of government gets bigger. It's become a cancer and will eventually collapse.

Note: the article says at the end that TN has already classified e-cigs as tobacco products as well, so it seems taxes are coming soon to a state near you. Also, wouldn't be surprised to see Obama charge the ATF with regulating them, gives them something else to do.

I've been in the ecig industry since 2008. It was only a matter of time. Back then, our numbers probably reached 500 total vapers nationwide. Now ... it's estimated at 1-2 million. That's 1-2 million+ packs of cigarettes not purchased DAILY. We are talking billions in lost tax revenue. By 2024 I believe, Vaping will overtake smoking. I wouldn't be surprised if it's before then. It's sad ... A product that could cut tobacco deaths in half or more, gets taxed and not praised for the product it is. ... sent from my pocket rocket ... my Samsung Note 3!
