Is this safe to do using in a rifle? Just curious about it.Thought I'd saw it talked about in here before. I searched but didn't see anything.

It is safe to use small rifle primers for any case that uses small pistol. Dimensionally they are identical.

You just need to ensure the gun will ignite the small rifle primer because they are generally harder than small pistol primers. You also need to work up loads again because some small rifle primers are hotter than some small pistol primers.

I use, and stock up on, small rifle primers because I use them in my 9mm and 45 ACP. I have small primer 45 brass and my 1911 lights the small rifle primers just fine. My Taurus 24/7 OSS DSS in 9mm also lights small rifle primers just fine.

Not it is NOT safe to interchange large rifle and large pistol because there are physical differences. Those differences can cause slam fires as well as out of battery discharges both of which are very, very dangerous for the shooter and bystanders.

Just thinking out loud but why not use small pistol primers?

sometimes, you use what you can find, as long as it is safe.

SPP are a little more scarce than small rifle if buying them. Or if they are like me They didn't realize they were out of SPP until they were ready to load.

DLM37015, David, is the only person I have seen with SPPs regularly. Might try contacting him to see if he had any. He also had the best prices of anyone. He is also very knowledgeable and willing to share it. You will not find a better person or a more honest business man either. He definitely takes care of his customers.

Ok, thanks for the replies.I was just wondering if I could use them if I got in a bind and SRP is all I had.About all I would use them in is lever action 357 rifles and a Ruger Blackhawk 357, so they should be no problem setting them off.So you think the SRP's burn hotter than the SPP's ?

Because if you run your .357s at the high end you will get primers flow and it will index hard as the flow creates a burr that drags across the recoil face or if you somehow get a little hotter than avg. you will pierce said primer and receive gas back through the action

Learned alot about this shooting .38 Supers

Load my .357s and my .40 S&W with SRPs  never a problem  and a bit of cheap insurance against primer flow.
