swaging or reaming 5.56/223

I have about 500 rounds to do and not sure what the best way to go, I have a multi stage press so I don't think the rcbs tool will work, I noticed that midsouth is out of stock on the hornady, let me know what some of you guys are using and what might be the best way to go. Thanks in advance for the help.

Are you talking about primer pockets with military crimp? If so, you could use countersink in a drill to cut the crimp out. I used to do this till I got the RCBS primer pocket swager. I us it in a single stage press though.

I hand ream with the Hornady reamers. My neighbor has the Dillon swag and it is nice but the reamer does what I need.
Just finished up 500 30-06 brass today and have a bunch of 5.56 to sort through tonight or tomorrow and see what needs reamed.

yes it is the military crimp, and the only problem is I only have a progressive press, I like the idea of a counter sink but afraid I might get carried away, I suppose I will have to look around for the hornady threaded tool and pick up one of those up.

Graf's or Wideners had the Hornady reamer in stock last week. Forget which place it was I saw them.

Stick your chamfer tool in there and give it a twist.

Ream here. I use a Hornady primer pocket reamer. I have an RCBS bench top swager and an RSBS crimp remover bit. The hornady works the best of all 3.

just for kicks my son and I went out and tried a few different items, we found an metric allen head wrench that fit and a Phillips head after
trying those the primer fit. So I will try a few more until I can get my hands on the hornady tool.

I've used a pocket knife. Works fine, but you have to sharpen about every 40 rounds, at least with my knife.

I am going to look at the website again for midsouth and see what they might have in stock, I don't think I want to use our pocket knives, they aren't the 200.00 type but still not cheap and they are our edc knives.

You've got to decide if you want to put the metal back where it belongs or take it away. I sprung the bucks for a Dillon swaging tool a while back. It was expensive but speeds up the process. Before that I had  a RCBS swagger tool. It worked fine but slower than the Dillon. Price was a lot better too. Only thing is that you.ve got to drag out the 'ol single station press.

During the great panic and run on ammo early last year, I acquired over 1,000 Lake City brass (military crimp).  I bought one of these below.  After the acute onset of carpal tunnel, I took my corded drill, placed it in a large vice, and used the bits that came with this hand tool in the drill, then took each piece of brass slowly and carefully.  Worked perfectly.  Took about 4 hours to do 1,100 pieces.  Very clean, very quick, and no carpal tunnel.

I don't twist any of my case prep tools by hand.

I prefer the swaging tool, have used the chamfering tools, but with older age ,harder to hold the brass and get an even chamfer, with the swaging tool everyone is identical. I have about 3 thousand 38 spl military brass and the crimp is really deep on them. Actually punched holes in some of the primers before they would pop out. Of course these are dated 77, 78,and 79.

we tried the allen head in a power tool and works fine, gonna use that till I can get over to midsouth and pick up the selected tool like one of the tools mentioned above. Thanks for all the imput.

The Lyman tool works fine by hand or drill.  It probably can be bought cheaper from Amazon or another internet store.  $6 shipping for one.
