I have caught plenty of small Rays down in Biloxi right off the bank, never could understand what the big deal was about cutting their tail off first thing. Always figured, well he might get you once if he can get you, no big deal.

That Ray hit him 100 times in seconds. Now I know why all those fisherman say to cut the tails off.

I've caught a lot of Stingrays off of the piers in FL. I always stand on their tail and stinger while we unhook them. Then just push them back off in the water. No need to kill them needlessly.

We see same interview? :)

Guy said ray stabbed "hundreds of times in a few seconds", but Irwin was apparently only hit once, as the fellow only described him as having the single wound, a "2 inch wide injury over his heart".

I thought a ray's stinger was barbed

Tis, but it's not like they can't get it back out of whatever they strike.

Stabbed 100 times and went through his chest like butter. He did explain the barb. Also sounds like Irwin and his partner felt like there was going to be a major accident eventually. It's the reason I don't swim way out in the ocean or walk through the mountains completely unarmed. Voluntarily moving down the food chain.
