replacing tritium vials in glock site?

Anybody ever tried to replace the vials in a trijicon night site set on a glock? The rear has hole that might be used for pushing them out. Front does not. Edited February 23, 2014 by seez52

Legally you can't and not supposed to be able to buy the vials separate. Being radioactive I believe there is only one or two authorized companies that can handle tritium for domestic commercial purposes. IIRC

I believe you MIGHT could source the vials from somewhere, but it's certainly not worth it to risk exposure to the stuff

I too inquired about having them re-lamped and it was about 50 bucks. But just thought it might be an interesting DIY project.

Let someone with the right equipment handle it. Tritium is a beta emitter that you don't want to inhale or otherwise ingest if you accidentally break a vial.

I want to re do my Gen 2 night sights ,id rather have the orig sights made to work again than buy new ones for 

authentication reasons

Tritium isn't something to mess with, best left to the professional even if it costs a little coin

Those who advocated "let a professional do it" are right... Ya dont want to accidently break a vial and get a snoot full of tritium... Alpha and beta particles are very bad for ya if inhaled or ingested...

I was under the impression that Trijicon offered lifetime free replacement on their tritium sights. Is that only with their optics? I'm pretty sure the ACOG and RMR has this kind if warranty. Supposedly tritium vials last about 12 years?

Yeah but tritium is the new mercury. Very fun to play with, glowing in the dark ia pretty cool also, not to mention and extra finger comes in handy occasionally

I sent them some old Glock factory night sights which I removed from a Glock 19. They determined the age of this specific set was > 12 years old so they said they were out of warranty, thus they offered to relamp them for a discount which would give me another 12 year warranty.

I'd probably just replace the whole sight if mine finally gave out. I know there are some guns that you have to send in the slide for vial replacement since the sights are regulated to the gun. The HK P7 springs to mind because I'd have to send in mine to get it done.

 

Considering the time and shipping both ways replacing the sights is probably cheaper anyways.

Having my old Glock sights re-lamped by Trijicon cost me $57 plus $1.50 to ship to them, they cover return shipping. So call it $59 total, which is just about half price of getting new, and the re-lamped sights are warranted for another 12 years. I'll take that deal any day. I have the tools to remove and reinstall them myself, but if you didn't have the tools and experience then it might cost you quite a bit to have new sights installed properly, so that's another plus for re-lamped. My newly re-lamped sights arrive tomorrow via UPS so I'll post a review with photos soon. Edited March 12, 2014 by wileecoyote
