Noob 3 gun info and gear

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, Interested in getting into three gun in the near future. Was hoping to some advice on necessary gear like mag carriers and such. Don't have a lot but gotta start somewhere. TGO AR in 556 with no variable optic, just an eotech. Should I run a magnifier with that or get a decent variable optic? No mag carriers yet. Glock 17 with TFO's. Looking at getting some warren tacticals. I use this in IDPA. I have a double mag carrier. Is that enough? Remington 870 with 18in barrel. Holds six plus one. I know a pump gun isn't ideal against the Benelli m4's, but could I compete with it? Also needing shell holder and carrier ideas. Laugh if you must, no worries. Just trying to get an idea of what I need. Any help is much appreciated!

Just shoot what you have until you figure out what you need. A lot depends on who is putting on the match and what rule set they go by. Probably the easiest to start with would be a few single pistol mag carriers, an AR mag carrier, some way to tote some shotgun shells, and a tube extension for the shotgun. The shell carriers are the hardest, because there's a few viable methods for reloading and investing in one just to find out the other works better is not a good way to go. A forearm carrier is relatively cheap but slow, but it will get you started. Also, depending on where you shoot, you could likely get some loaners for a match or two to see what works for you before you spend the cash.

in most cases the eotech will be fine, shoot a few first then decide. I do NOT think a magnifier will work well. for the sport and I can say I never have notice one in a match.

most will carry more than 2 spare 22 round mags

I am pretty sure you will not see any M4's, get tactical out of your head including IDPA for 3 gun.

on shotguns u will see M2, VM 930 etc.

now I think on the 870 u can put a mag ext on it to increase your capacity. if use a Nordic ext then with a new barrel nut you can swap it over to your next shotgun.

For ORSA or Cleveland the eotech is fine. Just use your glock and mag pouches like IDPA. You can use your hip pocket to carry an extra AR mag since some stages require a reload. As to the 870 that's what I shoot when I play 3 gun. I do have a long mag tub and 26" barrel but it was fixed back for Y2K!!!

Midway has some of the 4 and 6 shell caddies that are really cheap. Califorina Competition Works brand (think thats the right name). Get 2 or 3 of your size flavor and your pretty much set till you get bitten bad and dont recover.

For not recovering that will be when you spend boat loads of cash on a M2 tricked out and a 1-6/8 scope and some chest rig shotshell carrier........I stopped at the shot shell carrier LOL.

Another good resource is Brian Enos website. Tons of info under multi gun,
I'm still a noob but I learned real quick by going to matches and getting the time under my belt. 3 gun is a game, don't think tactical. It's about speed and accuracy. Lots of folks to help, minimal attitude. Lots of practice with what your going to shoot is a huge plus, especially w shotgun and loading. Go to some of the local matches to get a feel for what's going on and work your way in and up. Bunch of guys on TGO are now shooting 3 g so jump in and have fun hope this helps!

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 2 of course it ate my spelling.

Don't spend $$ until you have gone for 5 or 10 matches and are sure you want to do it a lot.  While in those matches, watch what people have and how effective it is or is not.   A lot of gear is just flashy, overpriced junk that won't do anything at all for your score.

6+1 is pretty low for a shotgun and you will spend a great deal of time reloading it in the shotgun stage.   Pumps rarely come anywhere near the times of autos.  Its pretty cheap to get a tube extender to get 10 rounds in it but you may want to go for an auto (same gun in auto is the rem 1100 and its a great, inexpensive choice).  But here again, don't run out to buy a gun until you are sure.   A few bucks on the tube extension is not wasted, esp since it can be put on the 1100 later IF you go that route, and I think the same one fits *most* shotguns.

I never got the chance to try out that "fits most shotguns" but it was on mine when I was looking at the versa max tactical.   Depending on where  you go shoot and whose there you might even get to borrow a shotgun.

Thanks for all the help guys. I can always count in TGO. So I also have a Remington versamax sportsman that I use to hunt with. Didn't even cross my mind to try to use that. It's a 28in though. Is that too much? Most likely will only be shooting at Orsa or Cleveland. I think the most confusing is carrying your shot shells as there as so many options. What works method works best for you all?

the VM would be the way to go and its coming strong in the sport.

Remington finally got a shotgun that works, in the sport away.

NOPE! It's perfect! Your used to the swing and everything. Just get ya an extension tube to hold at least 8 rounds (but I'd get one to max out at 10 or 11 for balance) and a hiviz sight and  your golden.

My opinon is start with these

4 round http://www.midwayusa.com/product/2394156343/california-competition-works-shell-caddy-tactical-shotshell-ammunition-carrier-12-gauge-4-round-2-3-4-and-3-shells-polymer

I use the 6 round because I;m fat and it gets the top out from under my gut. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/2394267180/california-competition-works-shell-caddy-tactical-shotshell-ammunition-carrier-12-gauge-6-round-2-3-4-and-3-shells-polymer

Pretty much everyone has some form of this loader in their bag. There are times when  you just need a few extra rounds and they dont wanna wear their full rig.  Even if you go to something else there will always be a need for these at some point. And learning the weak hand reload is pretty much a required skill.
