I have decided to make a new purchase of a .338. And that is where my problem starts. Need some help on making a decision on a Short mag or the new federal or the rcm. I think that i would either like a remmy .700 or a browning x bolt or tc icon but not sure that it comes in that load. any help would be appreciated.

You should buy one of each, and share with your friends, most noteably...the Bronker. Hey, those Montana Muleys are not going to kill themselves!:usa::D:D

Yes.Bench rested it was brutal.About 5 rds and call it a day.I am by no means a hunting rifle expert but a lot can be said for the .270 Win rd.Flat trajectory and it won't beat you up shooting it.BTW I weigh about 160 so heavy recoil bothers me more than most people.

Ive got a Remington Model 700 BDL-SS in .338 Remington Ultra Mag. It is a vey nice rifle. When I got it I just wanted a .338 for some reason? Will it ever see a hunting trip to Alaska? One day if I win the lottery, but other than that its a safe queen. I bought it, put a Leupold VX-III on it and dialed it in, which was brutal, lol. I shoot it every once and a while just to do it. The Ultra Mag is a bad dude, I take recoil pretty well and I dont want to shoot it more than 10 times per range trip. If you do get any .338 dont skimp on the optics, these rifles will beat a cheap scope to death.

Just shoot a ruger .338 win mag, phew- it has a little punch to it. recoiled so hard that i believe we (the bronker) and I destroyed a scope.

Yes, just as an FYI... The recoil of the .338 WinMag is substantial enough to back out the screws on the mounting base and scope rings. The scope was rattling around in the rings, and the rings upon the mount. Never seen anything like it. And of course, i also believe we busted up the turrets inside the scope. Just as Jcochran88 said.

Lesson learned: $15 walmart weaver rings and a $90 4x scope are no match for 16 rounds of 220gr of .338 winmag.

That thing is a beast. And I loved every bit of it!!!

My brother shot a chicken with the .338 I had.It was like a death ray,it did not move at all after being hit.

I was born and raised in Alaska, my grandparents and parents still live up there. My dad wanted a .338 win mag for years so my mom and I went in and got him a browning a-bolt with the boss. He shot it once and traded it in for a .300 win mag....lol. Trust me.....when it comes to hunting in Alaska, .300 win mag is the most versatile weapon you can own.....flat shooting, accurate, and powerful. Anything from whitetail deer in the states to grizzly bear can fall under its spell. Unless you are are wanting a DEDICATED bear rifle you need no larger. And if it is going to strictly be a bear rifle, get a .375 H&H. I've hunted moose and caribou with .30-30's before I moved onto my '06. With the '06 I never felt undergunned, but I don't chase bear. But I would have felt fine doing so with a .300 win mag. My grandfather rifle of choice is also the .300 win mag, and he's shot at least 15 moose and 10 bear with no issues.

I don't believe that a .300 is enough. Gun I think you should take me to Alaska and show me!

Lol....you buy the tickets, I'll show you.

I have found that the 375 H&H has a softer recoil than the .338 probably because of the powders used. It feels more like a "push" than a "slap". I put 50 rounds in a 375 at one sitting and felt great.Even a couple of days later when you expect to feel it the worst.

The .338 tried to kick my butt! I only put 10-15 rounds thru it and that was in a different week than shooting the 375.

Go with a 300 win mag. It will kill anything in N. America, including those elusive Alaskan brown bears that for some reason never made their way into my sights down here in E. TN. The 300 has more range on how you want to load it and it shoots flat and accurate. BTW I believe that Armalite is making a AR in 338 Federal. Go buy 1 of those so I can help you shoot it;)
