Park Pre emption Bill Compromise

It looks like the politicians are in the direction of not allowing us to carry in parks with playgrounds.  We need to work hard to not be made criminals at playgrounds.

"Speaker Beth Harwell predicted Thursday that legislation to block local bans on guns in parks will reach the floor of the state Houseicon1.png of Representatives, but she said she expects it to be amended to allow restrictions near children."

So I guess every park will be near children, so it will be illegal for us to carry with a permit?  We need to remind these politicians that only a small percentage of the population legally carries a gun in Tennessee and that we are not the problem wherever we carry.

So in other words, the most defenseless people amoung us, that might need protecting the most in the event of an active shooter or other event, will be denied the possibility of having help nearby that could intervene and save lives.

Makes perfect sense to me.

So long as they add another amendment requiring a police officer to be on duty at every playground.

If they strip law abiding citizens of the right to defend themselves and their own then it should be their responsibility. If they aren't willing to fill in the gap then they have no business creating one in the first place.

It is a shame to worry more about people with handgun carry permits than people without.

No. This is what happens when we elect dumbass politicians that pander to our cause, then turn their backs on us. Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk Edited by Moped

This is a back door deal in my mind. For $700 or less, any town or county could put a swing set in a park and bam, no firearms. May as well leave it like it is.

If they really mean "around children" by having a playground or anything, it makes the law pointless for me. If I am at a park, I am there with my kids, which means we are at the playground. I think what they actually mean is school events..basically clarifying the AG's opinion about schools kids making the park off limits. However, if that's what they do put down, it's ripe for a lawsuit as it's WAY too vague to pass Constitutional muster. How am I supposed to know in most parks if schools kids are there? There's also the reason to sue  that the current law having ANY restrictions is unconstitutional because it can not be proven to actually prevent crime. Heck, I think our permits fall under that since they have no way to stop people from carrying without a permit, therefore it can't prevent crime.

Also, if they did playgrounds, would this not make many parks that are currently legal (knox county for one) illegal?

Yep, and that is whole point, make as many places off limits as possible.

Everybody has to remember that only 1 republican voted against the parks law in the first place...  RINO Beth Harwell.

It's currently illegal to carry in a park that's hosting a school group, whether you know the school group is there or not.  In fact, the school group could be miles away from where you are and the way the law is written, it wouldn't matter.  Stupid, stupid, stupid...

Technically the way the law is written, you could be sitting in a McDonald's eating lunch, and the instance a school bus drives onto the property, you're violating the law.

It just highlights how bad the law is currently written.

Seems like pro US constitution laws should be flowing through the TN Republican held House and Senate like water running downhill. And signed by the Republican Governor in light speed. We are missing an opportunity!

Senate version (SB1496) up for vote tomorrow.  Been real quite on the run-up.

Passed 26 to 7.

The news media makes more of a fuss out of people with permits carrying in parks than the gang bangers roaming the parks with stolen pistols.  I can guarantee you there are plenty of gang bangers carrying in the Memphis parks right now.

They pass these stupid ammendments to make themselves feel like they're making a difference, but they're only making it worse.

UGH!!! I'm so frustrated.

What is it that they don't get? The people they need to worry about aren't gonna follow the damn laws.

And the Knoxville News Sentinel said that Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett was against the bill. Does anyone know anything about that? I find that VERY hard to believe.

What amendments did they pass in the senate?

Fence straddlers, every last one of them. They think that as long as they stay on the fence they'll get enough votes from both sides to keep their cushy jobs.........and they. Appear to be right.
