Actually, the manual is not very precise regarding this, hence many new owners' frustration.

Funny you mention that OS. I modded my bolt release just to do it and I don't know why. I never saw a difference cause I used it right before. I just never realized.

Well, if you don't see a difference you didn't do the mod correctly, as it allows bolt to release without touching the release lever, just pull bolt back and let it go.

5 minutes with a dremel fixes the bolt release. I have been doing this simple mod for years.  ONce done it still works but to release it all you have to do is pull back slightly on the charging handle and it is released.  It isn't hard and doesn't require anything but eyeball approximation.  Or you can buy an aftermarket replacement.

Well yeah, it does that now but it didn't really blow my mind in usefulness is what I was trying to say.
