Drones

Recommended Posts

No, this is not a Drone hunting thread! Although I have made it clear I will blast everyone of them out of the air that violates my "no fly zone". I got a crazy idea; I wonder if it would be feasible to use a drone equipped with a camera for some real time deer scouting? Buzz the tree tops and look for deer bedding, feeding ect.. Drones that I have been exposed to are very very quite and barely make a humming noise.

Ideas?

Yeah definitely. There are some that are pretty reasonably that would allow you to scout an area. I think I seen some that were in the sub $200 range that sent and live camera feed back to the controller.

Here is one:

The range is only 100 yards though.

Now if you wanted to record and then view later at home I am sure you can get a lot more range. Some can even be uploaded with a set route to cover and they will fly autonomously.

Some of this stuff is absolutely amazing. I have kind of been following the quadrotor stuff for a while now. What they can do and apparently how easy they are to fly is amazing.

There's also the AR quad-copter drone. I don't know if there's an app to do it easily, but these can be programmed to follow specific routes using GPS way points and elevations. If you're interested in programming, there's an event/movement/language framework called Nodecopter, which allows you to program the AR quadcopter to perform specific functions... anything from using an iPad to control or to follow specific GPS routes.

Again, I don't know if there is any easy way as I've only been exposed to them via the Nodecopter side of things.

There's a part of me that just can't go this far and still consider it a fair hunt (not saying anyone here would do this while actively hunting, but we know there is some idiot out there that would).  I don't mind if someone else wants to do it to scout I suppose, I just feel like hunting isn't really hunting anymore.  Some of the best parts for me is doing the ground work and trying come up with a plan.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't and that's ok.

I don't agree with it for hunting, and give it time, and TWRA will have rules against it. I'm thinking along the lines of using it like a trail cam, but in real time for scouting purposes, checking food plots, trespassers ect ect.

Some of the models have a go home gps mode that will either come home and land when instructed, or when they lose your control signal.

It records the home position when you take off, so if it flys beyond control range it will come back to you. That sounds like an essential feature for outdoors flight.

Would be a pretty cool setup if one with enough range could be had without crippling the bank account. I've got a good friend that's retired military working on some pretty amazing robotics for military use so I know what you are wanting to do CAN be done. Going at it the way he does it would be cost prohibitive if the use was surveying deer and a mans private property not to mention some of the parts and programming aren't something the military is just going to hand over to any Tom, Dick and Harry. I'm supposed to go help with a few things next week so i'll pick his brain on the matter.

It would be great for use on a cattle farm, or any large, open farm for that matter. There's a project in Africa that will allow meds to be transported to remote villages. There will be charging stations along the way and trained operators to hook them up and send them off to their next destination. Sent from my Kindle Fire

I could see the benefit for something like pig hunting. Last trip to Texas my uncle took me out and we saw tracks everywhere but never spotted them... thinking about the terrain there how long it took just to do one loop around the farm we could have used something like this and not waste time if they're not out you don't go out...
Pretty soon your mail and packages may be delivered by drone...
Amazon is working on that. I think drone hunting will really be a thing when that happens. Shoot a drone, get a prize! Sent from my Kindle Fire

Oh no, this is turning into some real Call of Duty nonsense...The struggle is becoming real!

:tinfoil: :tinfoil:

I'm thinking a coke can with caps removed on both ends then several thin, rigid tubes inserted in a circular pattern inside. Stuff bottle rockets in there with the sticks cut down, then tie in their fuses with one ring main fuse on the backside. Then initiate the ring main fuse with an Estes rocket squib which is electrically fired by an auxiliary switch on the drone which can be tripped on the remote.... bam, you got a quad drone with a rocket pod, ready for the 4th of July.
