It looks like Ruger's "announcement" that they are entering the in-house custom shop market.

Lots of posters here are Ruger owners and fans, me included.

The GP is a solid platform and is currently customized by at least one high-end gunsmith, here's a used one for sale...

$900 from Ruger or $1250+ from a true custom shop

I can personallyvouch for Marc's quality of work in the SP line.

I'd love to see what Ruger come up with as a custom shop gun. Tend to doubt I would splurge on one, but you never know. The GP and SP lineups are underrated IMO. Durable as all get out and loaded with potential.

My former GP100 and 686 are the only two guns I really regret selling. I think I miss the GP just a smidge more, because I put that thing through hades when I was in the height of my reloading experimentation days... I never went outside of published data, but I still touched off some incredible explosions with that thing and it never skipped a beat. Boy would it get warm, though!

Got the chance to hold one. It's really sweet.

But to be honest...I doubt I'd be any better with this than my old GP100.

It sure is pretty though.

Well, on a whim, I picked up one and ... me likey!!!

VERY QUICK single action trigger.  I ended up changing the spring rate to 10 LBS and the double action if VERY smooth!!!

Still getting used to the 357 Mag bang but liking it a lot...

Haven't shot the GP100 before but this is really NICE!!!

I'm curious as to how they could make the GP100 any better?  It's my favorite gun!

Don't really know all that was done...but it really does seem better than the GP100. And it's a tossup for me between my Model 19 3" and the GP100. Love 'em both.

But still falls into the "it won't make me shoot any better catagory" so I can't justify it.

I like that they eliminated the full underlug.  That's my only quibble with the regular GP, though I understand that lots of folks like it.  It'd be nice to have the option without stepping up to 'Match' price.

I'm new to the whole world of firearms, but I know this much -- that is one more beautiful gun!

A bit of friendly advice here. Since you've mentioned several S&W possibilities; what ever you do...Don't hold the Ruger Match Champion! It is Very Difficult to put it down.

Davidson's did a run of 4.2 inch half-lug GP 100's sometime ago. They pop up from time to time, both new and used. I snagged one used about two years ago in a trade. Asking price used with some wear was $425. It has fixed sights and looks more like a Speed Six than a GP 100. Best trade I've ever made.

I had the option to "slab-side" my SP with Marc @ Gemini Custom.

Since I didn't know if it made a difference, I opted-out and just had the "bill board" removed

What benefit comes from a slab sided barrel?

I held one at my lgs this morning.  Needless to say, you were most definitely right.  Fortunately, lest my wife use it shoot me, all I left behind was a pile of drool on the counter.  But hey, there's always tomorrow.  Seriously, it's a very nice gun - just carries a pretty steep price tag.

Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for one.  In the meantime I recently soothed my desire for a half or no-lug revolver by purchasing a S&W 64-6.

Those 64, 65, 66, and 67 model Smiths are some really good wheel guns still at reasonable prices.

FWIW, JGSales has a bunch of police trade-in 64's right now, though all they have left are DAO.
