Opinions on the viability of 5.56 powder coated bullets

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

A couple of friends and I are just getting in to casting our own bullets. We are starting with 9mm and plan to powder coat them.

This endeavor is in it's infancy as we've just accumulated all of the components and equipment.

We hope to chrono the first rounds within the week.

A shout out and Thanks to Dolomite for his advice and guidance,

My questions revolved around the cost effectiveness and accuracy potential of casting and powder coating rounds for 5.56.

How have you guys made out with this? (powder coated lead 5.56 rounds)

How have the rounds held up in regards to accuracy and velocity?

Do you think this is a cost effective effort?

We are also considering the .300 Blackout platform. None of us own the uppers, but we all have AR's in 5.56.

I know that's a whole other direction...but it's intriguing.

The thoughts and opinions of the TGO folks are welcome and appreciated.

ETA  Any load data and or suggestions and experiences are welcome. TIA.

I havent yet, but will as soon as I get a mold. I'm in on a group buy for a 75gr mold from ACE. Looks like it will be a month or so before it goes out. From what I have been reading the faster twists can be to much for lead. I have seen reports of the nose twisting off the NOE 70gr bullet in a 1/7 twist. There are a lot of people that shoot lead thru ARs in 223, dont know that anyone on here does

LOL...I bet Caster does too. :pleased:

Thanks guys.

My AR's are 1:9...so maybe it's something to try...

We probably need to pursue the 300 Blackout. It's as good an excuse as any to pick up another upper.
