converting m1 to m1-d

Hey guys. My ears were burning.

Ok..the M1D.

this weapon was built by taking an existing Garand (only springfield arsenal barrels were used) and modifying it at service depot level maintainence.

As all M1D rifles were rebuilt rifles, the receiver may be of any manufacture and of any serial number produced prior to the date of the rebuild. The same applies to the individual components, any part made prior to the date of the rebuild is correct. All M1D barrels were made by Springfield Armory.

So, basically you're taking any receiver and mating it with a springfiedl "star guage" or "match grade" barrel.

after that, a 7/8" or 1" scope mount.

usually weaver scopes or M84 scopes were used.

The M1D design was invented and patented by John C. Garand and was intended to allow conversion from service rifle to sniper rifle at the support maintenance level. Most M1D rifles were equipped with the M84 telescope and 7/8" diameter mount. However, examples rebuilt in the 1960s have been observed with the Weaver K4 telescope and 1" diameter mount. M1D rifles equipped with the K4 scope were issued to National Guard units in the 1960s for riot suppression during anti-Vietnam War and civil rights disturbances.

If you're looking to build one on your own you'd have to find a match grade barrel and then find the parts needed.

you can look online more than likely and find the blueprints for such a rifle.

Rogue, if you can get the barrel, then its not even a problem for a gunsmith to install your scope and barrel.

then you just have to be fairly good with making the leather cheek pad...

and there you have it.

if you just want to MAKE a garand into a D model without the barrel then its easier..but then again..it wouldn't be mil-spec.

if you have a springfield m1 you can buy the scope mounting base and install it or have it installed (the D model was designed so that any m1 Garand could be fitted with it, to my knowledge. The fact that Springfield barrels were used may only be because of a contract or because of their accuracy.

Try Fulton Armory for an M1C/D grade barrel. Or possibly Miltech Arms.

Have tried both of these and not been able to answer my questions. Concentrating more on 1953 I'm trying to figure out the last month Springfield Armory produced the M1D barrel.
