Brutnus,

I can tell you that in most major cities in Tennessee you have to get a permit and have a license (alarm or contractors) to do it. Also while that sounds high I know acguy in Nashville that is charging upwards of 125.00 a drop. And gets it every day.

Yeah to do it when I was younger it required a low voltage license, I wasn't on the billing/quoting end though so I have no input on the going rate per drop.

How much did they bid? I can tell you that not counting travel time its about 100.00 a drop terminated and tested.

$1800

Who's the company that shot you a high price. Beacon is the only one that I know of.

prefer not to call them out publicly.  I will just take my business elsewhere.

Are they core switch to access switches in those offices, or are they switch in the server room to individual nodes in those offices? What kind of cabling are they quoting...Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a, Cat7?

The cables are going to be used for some new phones that need to draw there power off the ethernet cable.  This was int he quote I received:

·       10 Cat 6 plenum dual cable drops for v/d (10 cables)

·       10 Cat 6 jacks

·       Patch Cords for IT Room end and user end

·       J hook cable support system

·       Low Voltage Permit included

·       All firestop per codes

·       Provide customer test results at completion of project

·       Terminate, test, and label all cables

So it isn't overkill on the cabling at all. I thought maybe they were hitting you with 10GbE cabling just because, and that we could soon see 10 GbE to the desktop. Most of the cost is labor, and distances come into play with that. I assume that you have a PoE switch already, or that you are using a midspan off of standard switch for the PoE since it is not indicated above?

To be clear, I am not a cabling guy, but I am a technical pre-sales consultant for networking equipment, so I have to know my Layer 1 too to advise business customers on what to purchase and have installed.

Why would you have to pull a permit to run ethernet drops in an existing building? I understand adhering to codes with plenum wiring. I just don't get the permit thing.

Don't understand either but in Brentwood you have to pull permits for any change you make in a commercial building.  Brentwood Codes are sticklers for following the rules.
