I rescued a Winchester yesterday

Yesterday, I  bought the saddest looking Model 94 Winchester you have ever seen.  It is a post 64 model that had been 'customized' by a former owner and allowed to sit in his barn for a couple of years.

 

Here is a picture of the 'custom' buttlplate installed.

Next is a shot of the starboard side showing the condition of the finish.  Most of the early post 94s had a very poor finish that could get like this one in the picture in a hurry.

If you have a good eye, you will notice that the scope is upsidedown.  Maybe it was do so to make the rig more streamlined and not catch the turret on brush.

 

Here is a view of the port side.  The side mount was loose and a lot of rust had accumulated under it.

And finally, a picture of the entire gun.  Not a good photo, but it shows placement of the upper sling band.  I cannot imagine slinging the gun with the butt below your knees.  Maybe it was to make the hunter more streamlined while breaking brush.

So now the work begins.  I am also looking for a factory buttplate, plastic or metal and the original length screws to plug the holes where the scope mount was screwed into the side of the receiver.

 

I am soaking the receiver in kerosene for a couple days so I can get some of the rust freckling under control.  This is going to be my part time project for the rest of the winter.  I hope I can make the old girl presentable enough to go back out in public again.

Someone a lot more tech savvy than me is going to have to explain why some of you can see the pictures and some can't.

 

If you love and respect guns, maybe it's just as good that you can't see the abuse inflicted on this one.

Did you shuffle your photobucket around? It says you deleted the pictures, which normally means you swapped them into another folder or something.

$300 with 9 boxes of factory ammo.  

 

With luck, I can restore it to bubba truck gun condition for another $100.  This is the gun I am going to take to the bayous of Arkansas for pig and deer hunting.  The 1:12" twist of 94 barrels make them very good cast bullet guns.  If, I can get enough gunk out of the barrel to find lands and grooves.

Hey, at least the wood looks pretty nice, and for being in a barn, the rust isn't as bad as I would have expected.
