Dear Rogue

I guess my first post here will be on one of my favorite calibers. I have long used Accurate Arms 2520. I also use military brass. This has worked very well for me, basically duplicating the service match load of a 173 gr bullet at 2640 fps.

30/06

173 fmj match c.o.a.l. 3.288â€

lake city 69 brass

cci 200 primer

46.0gr AA2520

velocity in 22†ruger 2647fps

This has been VERY accurate in Match Garands and my hunting rifle, a Ruger Stainless 30/06. One could get more power, but as a match load out to 300 or so yards, this is a tried and true load. For the 168 SMK, one could go to 46.5 gr 2520. This is, of course for the military hull. I load one grain more for commercial cases. The easiest way to cut your groups in half is to segregate hulls according to weight. Using hulls within one-half grain will cut your groups. You may be surprised about the consistency of GI brass.

I use a stiff charge of Reloder 22 with the 165 gr Hornady as a primary hunting load in my '06. This cartridge is so versatile that many powders and bullet combinations work well. The round was and is an all time classic and yardstick by which ALL other cartridges are measured.

One should get a good manual and look at their local gunshops to see what is customarily available in their area. It will not be hard to get an excellent load for the 30/06.

This thread looks to be a bit stale, but i'll throw in 2 bits.

I think IMR-4350 was the original military powder designed for the .30-06, but I could be wrong. I've had pretty good luck with the IMR powders for accuracy in general for bolts, so that would be what i'd try. For a garand i'd stay in the midrange of the velocity's listed for whatever weight you want.

If the range is 300 meters and under, I might try a flat based hollow point if you can find one in .30 caliber. I've had really good luck with fbhp's in any caliber i've loaded for accuracy, and they are seemingly not to picky on the charge you use. Otherwise the 173gr fmj match bullet is probably your best bet for a good bulk bullet as previously mentioned.
