My original 2A Memes/Pics

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

these are memes that I created for my page. Just wanted to share and get any feedback. I use a free program thats pretty easy, but lame, and was thinking of upgrading to Photoshop or something else.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_meme

What gjohnsoniv posted are memes. What you posted are not memes because you're not mimicking a widely shared image/action/video.

Since you asked for feedback, here's mine:

I think many of your color pallet and font choices suck. They look like what many web pages looked like in the early days of the web when we used lots of colors and cutesy fonts with every effect known to man just because we could. Using your first set for an example, why are all the "T" s lower case but all other letters are upper case? Sure it's "different" but it's abnormal to read. Your 5th one down quoting Tench Coxe looks like an old Windows 3.1 word processor threw up all over my monitor. Why are there 8 different font colors (see your 2nd slide for the same color count explosion), nearly all of which are hard to read against that background? The only thing missing is flashing text and a bad MIDI soundtrack and I'd have thought I was back in 1997. Take a look at http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com/ . They do a good job of showing what not to do with everything from navigation, to colors and fonts that make reading difficult. It's actually a serious site dedicated to helping people understand what they're doing wrong on web pages which makes their message get lost due to bad design choices.

I'm not knocking your content or creativity, but your delivery leaves a lot to be desired. Good design requires both catching someone's attention and holding someone's attention. If your stuff takes effort just to read it, much less comprehend it, people will skip it. In this case, less is more.

Something like Photoshop can make doing design work easier, but it's not a requirement. I've seen some amazing photo and graphics work done in something as simple as MS Paint, but it takes a lot more skill than using easier tools like Photoshop.

I appreciate the candor about the work. The example used about the T's is just the way the text in the program did it. I didn't personally choose to use only lower case t's, but I appreciate what your saying. The colors are definitely a little obnoxious in some as well. I tried to vary things up a little bit and just went too far. I am by no means a graphic designer, I'm just a 2A supporter that wanted to spread some ideals, ideas, thoughts and info. These posters were my first attempt at doing such.
I was kind of hoping for feedback on the content as well. Some of it is original and some are actual memes.

As far as the definition of meme, the connotation of "internet meme" has become exactly what I posted above.I know it's a view/belief that gets passed around and shared, but the term "meme" has been taken over by the internet (collectively) as a term for these "posters" that people create and share to mock, illustrate a point or share their thoughts.

Thanks again

Before the internet, as best I recall, a meme was a sociological concept, about ideas which spread in similar fashion to disease vectors. Not implying that they are bad or good, merely that they follow propogation rules similar to disease epidemics.

Maybe an internet meme is about the same, but the original definition was "more general".

I understand and respect that. My criticism was offered so that your second attempt will be more effective. The method is as critical as the message. Look at the memes shared here by others. They're very short and simple. Ideas need to be concise and catchy to spread on social media.

Instead of These patriots didn't freeze, starve or die for hunting rights range time or antique gun collecting. These "EXTREMISTS" wanted freedom from tyranny, perhaps try rephrasing it like Washington fought for freedom from tyranny, not hunting rights. That makes it mimicable by changing a few words. It can quickly become Patriots fought for freedom from tyranny, not hunting rights. or Washington fought for freedom from tyranny, not to collect antique guns. All of which are much more concise and more sharable, but still convey the point.
