Starter .308?

Hey I'll take you in a different direction.  I've owned several PTRs, and a Ruger GSR.  For shooting it at the range, get a 5.56 platform like an AR or Mini-14.  Get a decent bolt gun in .308 for hunting, right now my deer rifle is a .308 Howa Ranchland and I love it, for hunting.  No .308 is personally my choice for plinking.  The Ranchland is very handy, 5 round internal mag, and about 1/2 the price of a GSR.  Not to hate on .308 semi-autos, I've always just found the .223/5.56 rifles cheaper and more fun to shoot, especially for new shooters. Typically even entry .308 bolt guns will be significantly more acurate than entry semi-auto .308/7.62 weapons, and thus a better choice for hunting.  Just my $.02.

I love my CEMTE but I have had it up for sale locally here for about a month for 700 with a lot of extras, about 300 rounds, bi-pod, scope and mount etc.. Not a single bite. Took me a long time at the range to get it dialed in to where I like it, 600 yards and I get 6" groupings. Best it will do. Lots of ammo through it. Been as reliable as my Sig. Knowing that, I would strongly recommend getting something in 5.56 for casual shooting. And get a .308 bolt gun for hunting/target. I should have gone that route, but whatever, it is what it is. Got a raise at work, so I may keep my CETME. Was selling it fund a 5.56 SBR. The CETME is just too heavy ;)

You could get one of those pistol "braces", then you can take it where ever you go as it is a pistol and falls under your carry permit and not a SBR. ;)

*NOTE*- Do NOT run a vertical foregrip on a pistol, such as in this picture, as that will classify it as a SBR. You CAN however use something like a Magpul AFG or the KAC hand stop mounts.
