SIG 556

Hello All!

I am new to this forum, however, I recently aquired the SIG 556, and figured I would start my first post with a review, since I have not seen many of these. I will post pics as soon as I get a chance to upload them.

Overall, I like the design of the rifle. You AK fans will find it very familiar. Nice and sturdy. Seems reliable and rugged, however I haven't yet put it through much. The action was very smooth, and it was fun to shoot.

Pros:

Smooth Action

Well built

Picatinny Rails

Uses AR Mags

Cons:

Front heavy

Limited avaliability of specialty accessories.

Completely right handed design, except safety. (I'm a lefty)

Requires tool (Screwdriver or coin or other flat object) to strip for cleaning. This is due to the front screw that hinges the upper and lower.

I have heard comments of this being a "plastic AK". I see no more synthetic materials than any other modern rifle of this type. Most of this rifle is metal. Also, the bolt is separate from the gas piston, as I have been told is an improvement over the AK, however I don't know the AK well enough to comment fully.

As for accuracy, I cannot yet comment. I have not put enough time in at the range to yet make a judgement. I have been told it is as accurate as an AR, but I would image it would at least match an AK in that respect. Also, it is recommended to use at least 62 grain ammo with the 1 in 7 barrel.

In conclusion, this is an excellent rifle. It has its short commings, but it durable, well constructed, and just plain fun to shoot.

I almost bought one of these, but recently ordered a Polish AK-74 instead... I'm sure the Sig is very accurate, the Sig 550 platform has always been noted as one of the most accurate intermediate rifles in the world.
