4. In a hurry to shut down, I get a message... "downloading new updates. Do not shut down computer."
5. In a rush to check one thing before leaving, so I turn on laptop and get a message, "Installing update 1 of 3. Do not shut down computer." It takes 15 minutes.

Heh, yeah I could start a whole new thread on forced updates. It's a problem with many things but Microsoft seems to be one of the worst, especially with the XBox. Nothing more fun than wanting to settle down to a movie and the xbox wants to update (10 minutes) then Netflix wants to update (another 10 minutes). Not that I watch Netflix on the XBox anymore. In fact, I don't use it for much of anything.

Windows 7 at least allows you to specify to download updates and ask before installing. Then you can shutdown without the stupid updates. I would assume 8 allows this as well but I wouldn't be surprised to hear different.

Win8 tells you how many days before it requires a restart to install the updates, I usually go pass those days anyways or restart it when I'm not doing antything with it..

Here's the problems I had... note the past tense. I'm using Linux Mint now.

I'm very glad to have started this thread. Lot I
didn't know about Win8. Linux has all the stuff
I need, though, and I remember how fast it boots.

Now, just to get it back.
