Window tint stops are highly dependent on the vehicle the tint is riding on...most of the time.

Someone posted about out of state registration and tint; unless you are residing in TN long term (i.e. - college, work, etc.) your vehicle does not have to comply with 55-9-107. Stopping an out of state tag for window tint alone is not a legal stop - that came straight from the District Attorney when me and some co-workers posed the question a couple years ago. And a TN officer has no authority to enforce any other state's laws regarding window tint (unless there's long term residence, as I said before).

Is that clear as mud?

Here's a scenario:

Say I stop a car for speeding, and it's a visitor from Utah. And let's also say that I have a list which shows that Utah's tint requirement is 40%. I proceed to measure the tint, which comes in at 20%. Even though I know Utah's requirement, and that the vehicle is in violation, I have no authority to enforce their law under my commission on a visiting vehicle.

That's your local DA's opinion. But you are not enforcing another state's statute rather TCA. It is the same as the states that require a front plate and also having a law that requires vehicles registered in State A that requires front plates to be displayed while in State B. It is lawful and officers can do it. But I don't know about you but I aint got enough room in my brain to try to remember other states' laws. I could care less if a vehicle from New York doesn't have a front plate or 20% tint.

I am almost positive that TCA has changed to where vehicles from other states have to follow that as well. It was purposely done so that people would stop registering cars in other states to avoid tint laws pertaining to them.

I got stopped by a state trooper specifically for window tint. I crossed the highway on a side road and he was approaching the intersection on the highway, several hundred yards away. He turned down the side road and stopped me. He stated, "I could see those windows were too dark from way off." They were illegal and I knew it and I got a ticket. I paid the ticket and left the tint on the truck till I sold it a few months later. BTW, the trooper only checked the driver side front window, but it was the same tint all around. I had 2.5% on my old first truck in high school. Came in handy with my then girlfriend. My parents were always home... B)
